...when your dog behaves, so you automatically wonder if she is sick?

yes! i know exactly what you mean lol. my mutt (ringo) that i have had for about a year is always getting into some sort of trouble.we got him from my grandparents because he liked to chase cows, and there is no way they would put up with that. He is the love of our life, he is funny, and sweet, but when he isn't getting into trouble (like escaping from our fenced in area for him, which is quite large, about 4 acres) we automatically assume he is either sick or depressed...lol

No I feel awful awful awful. To the point I dont think I should ever ever be forgiven. I had a 5 month old english bull dog foster who all of a sudden started actually going to his kennel when I said kennel instead of running away under the coffee table. For about 2 days he would go in there every time I said kennel without fail. He was even going in there for alone time. I kept thinking something was wrong but every time I would get ready to make a vet appt he would go play and be rambunctious with the rest of the guys so I brushed it off. Well the third day (last Saturday) I went to go let everyone out in the morning and I found him dead in his crate. How wierd that you posted this Jamiya. I have been trying to let this go, but oh my I dont think I ever can. I said those exact words, isnt it funny that Bronco is now listening and I think he is sick? Its all my fault. I have never felt so awful in my life.
(sorry I just needed to actually get that out there. Ive been trying to bottle it up but I cant anymore)

I'm so sorry, MaydaysMom! It wasn't your fault. You thought about bringing him to the vet but he seemed okay. Sometimes there are very little signs that something is wrong. Maybe it was just his time to go.

I lost my dog this summer in a similar situation, but I KNEW she was sick. It didn't seem too bad. It seemed like just a cold, like she had in the past. She was drinking her water, wagging her tail, coming when called. So I waited to bring her to the vet. It was a weekend, so I figured I would buy some canned food Saturday morning and if she wouldn't eat it, I would take her to the emergency vet. Saturday morning I woke up early to check on her, and she was gone.

I will always feel guilty and blame myself. But my husband says at least she died at home instead of terrified in some strange vet's office. And she didn't grow old and suffer until we wondered if we should put her down. She was 11.5 years old, but healthy as a pup until a day before she died.

I know how you feel. Hang in there. It does get easier.

My dog was a lot like yours, Jamiya. She was fine, and incredibly healthy, especially for her 15.5 yrs (except that she was going blind and deaf, but that didn't affect anything)! The last two weeks though, was a rapid decline. First, she began limping on a leg she had blood drawn on, then she jumped up on our picninc table (one of those metal ones with all of the little holes, you know what I am talking about?) which she did all the time, only this time when she jumped off she was dangling by a nail, which then came off, and then she was limping on that leg, so she had two bad back legs now. And then, finally, a few days later, she had a stroke, possibly from a blood clot from where she had her blood drawn. She was paralyzed from teh stroke, and we aren't sure she even recognized us. We took her to the vet, where they said we could put her in a therapy, and she could possibly regain teh ability to walk and recognize us again. She would have been in that hospital awhile, and not gotten to come home, and it would have been really expensive, and as she was already 15.5 yrs. old the chances of her being alive by the time the therapy was finished were very slim, so she was put to sleep, and we now have Ranger . A happy ending to a sad story, in my opinion!

I know I shouldnt blame myself but I just cant help it. I bottle fed his litter since they were only 4 days old. None of the babies made it and I feel like I failed them. 2 of them past from auto immunedefiencies. I should have been more alert bc of that fact. He was the only one to make it that long. He was 5 months. Its just so upsetting. You fall hopelessly in love with these babies and you give them all you got so they find great, wonderful homes, and they dont even make it out of foster care. Ive had really really bad luck this month. I have lost a puppy, 2 kittens, and my pittie had a bowel obstruction ( oh yes and guess what it was! Clay litter!) My paranoia is just getting worse. Its enough to make me quit rescue. I just dont think I can handle anymore. It was so wierd, I got his brothers ashes back a day before Broncs passed. Sorry, I just dont have a lot of support when things go bad. All I hear is what did you expect doing rescue? It just breaks my heart.

MaydaysMom, there are a lot of people who do rescue on another board I go to. They may be able to provide you more support. Please e-mail me at jamia_w@hotmail.com if you would like the URL of the board.

MaydaysMom,
I too am/was a foster mom, and I have done lots of work for local rescue groups.
I know it’s a terrible thing to lose a dog, but in the time you had with your foster dog you showed him more love and care than he ever had in his entire life, and that should make you feel good.

…and the cats too, it truly takes a special person to do the things you are doing. There are not many people in this world who will go out of their way to care for animals that are not theirs. Working with a rescue just think of all the animals you have helped. Don’t ever give up because there is an animal out there that needs your help.
Than You!
Take a snap shot of all the animals you helped find loving homes, make a collage and when you are feeling blue, look at it and I’m sure you will have a smile on your face.

You are making me feel sad!!! I sympathise with you, as when I bred my dog accidently, 5 of the pups died from mummy attacking them. I felt helpless and I was crying for days, just watching one at a time die. I didn't know what to do???? Don't be hard on yourself please!!!!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. When it rains it pours and when it pours it hails. I just lost 2 more kittens tonight.
They were fine when I got home from work and then I went in to check on everyone they were gone. The vet said their abdomens didnt seem to be fully formed.
Could it get any worse?
