I did a search and didn't see a similar topic, sorry is there was one.

My dog doesn't bark to go outside when she has to potty. She acts weird and puts her tail down so if I see her I can tell she needs to go out, but if I'm not in the same room I don't know. We had this problem before and I got her to where she was barking to go out. But then she figured out that I would take her out when she barked so she started barking just to go outside. I must have discoured this behavior, b/c now she doesn't bark at all. Now I can't even remember how I got her to start barking before.

We are on a schedule and it was working well until I started trying different foods for them. The different foods threw off their pooping schedule.

My other dog will whine if he has to go out, but she hasn't learned from this. Any ideas on how to get her to bark to potty without getting her to bark anytime she wants to go outside?!

Hi, Does your dog know how to speak? if so, you might try, standing by the door, have the dog speak for a treat, then open the door, go outside and give it the treat. Over and Over again....don't know if it will work, but worth a try. Susan

I should have finished that thought! because the dog will bark, just to go outside, don't give him/her a treat until it does it's business. Plus my vet told me to give a one word command for training a dog to "go" outdoors. Pautty..or whatever else you can think of for the same thing....Susan

She doesn't speak on command, but I can get her to speak by making noises at her. I think thats what I did before. When she looked like she had to go out I would make her bark before I would take her out. I will try that again and use the treats only when she does potty. Hopefully she will get it. If anyone else has any other suggestions, let me know.

You could also try teaching her to ring a bell when she needs to go out.

Ring a bell? That is very interesting. Do your dogs do that?

Her latest problem is that even when I take her out she doesn't want to go. I'm guessing it is because it is cold. You would think that when it is below zero that she would hurry up so we can go back in, but no she just stands there like its too cold to do anything. It takes forever to get her to potty but I make her stay out b/c I know she has to go. I'm wondering if part of the problem is b/c she doesn't want to go outside b/c it is so cold, so she just goes in the house. The weather is going to warm up a bit, so maybe that will help.

Hi, I was interested in the bell thing also! hope Jamiya replies, so we can see if that's what her dog does.....Does your dog have a sweater or coat? if not, you might want to invest in one, maybe that would help. Do you take him out every hour? that also might help. Good luck! Susan

It's her feet that get cold. She will stand there with only three feet down, and alternate the foot that is up in the air. She needs doggy snow boots.

I used to take her out at set times, although lately I've been taking her out a lot more to prevent accidents.

No, I have a lot more basic problems to be working on before ringing a bell. But it is on my list of things to teach her once she is under control.

I think one thing I read said to just ring it on your way out every time, or hang it so the dog brushes it on the way out. They will associate the bell with going out and begin to ring it when they want to go out. But I can't find what I read that in.

The instructions that I can find says to hang a string of bells near the door (like those jungle bells on a leather strap they sell this time of year). Rub one or two of the bells with a piece of hot dog. Ask the dog, "Do you want to go outside?" and invite him to sniff the bells. Once he smells the hot dog, he will take a lick and the bells will ring. Quickly open the door, let him out, praise him, and give him the hotdog. Let him out and reward him every time he rings the bells.

Now, I am wondering how you keep the dog from ringing the bell just to be let outside to get a hotdog. I think I wouldn't use the hotdog very long at all, especially for a dog who already knows what to do outside. And I think if the dog started ringing the bells just to go out (even when he doesn't have to potty) I would happily let him out and then shut the door (with me still inside) and leave him staring unhappily inside for a few minutes. I would think the dog would learn to only ring the bell when he really needs to go.

Good luck, and let me know what works!

My Mushka is the same way, no bark for out but she will bark for in.
She gets a look on her face when she needs to go out, she also holds her tail funny this is known as ‘the poopie tail’ and the former is ‘the poopie face’!
We keep her on a schedule, so we know when she needs to go out.
