Hi, I'm worried about Casey, she is so skinny! even though I feed her alot. I have boiled her chicken, and she eats her dry food as well as cheese, and whatever else kind of treat I can think of. Do you have any suggestions for a new mommie's diet? Mike thanks for the chicken idea, it was a good one! Thanks in advance for your help. Sincerely, Susan

Hi Susan:

How old is Casey? What breed is he/she? What kinda dried food? How many times a day do you feed? Casey's eating e v e r y t h i n g you give him, & still skinny?!? Healthwise Okay? Possibly worms..? Not sure, has he seen a vet? Is it that or near that serious? If you could answer these Q's, i'll have a better idea of what i can recommend, but it'll only be my suggestion....

Susan, those babies really take alot as you can see! I'm guessing on this one, but I would feed her as much good quality food as she wants to eat. Are you free feeding her or does she eat on a schedule? Maybe someone can offer some fattening up recipes for moms.
I know my horse trainer who raises Boxers always complains about how much the pups take off mom. His female always looks skinny for a bit, he babies her along.

I would say that is completely normal. My own dog after giving birth was really skinny for about two weeks until she left the pups more and her appetite returned to normal. Its amazing how much weight they lose after giving birth but its also amazing how quickly the weight is put it back on! I wouldn't worry, you should start to notice her gain weight in a few days-week.

hi Susan it is quite normal for a bitch to lose weight while she feeding puppies.

The way i got out of that was feeding my dogs 4 times aday as feeding puppies is very demanding on mummy.

You can also give her puppy substitute formula instead of water this helps with the milk and has lots of fats and protiens in..

Was casey wormed the week before she had the puppies. If not you can worm her now this will also be passed through her milk to the puppies and make sure that they dont have any worms.

High fat foods can be given to casey. eggs boiled with rice and mushed together is high in fat aswell as protien this should help her regain her weight.

So all things like eggs chicken lamb rice can be given to her.

With her having puppies she should be eating double her normal feeds dont worry about over feeding as if she dont want to eat she wont so feed her as often as you like..

You will find that she seems to be hungry all the time which is also normal...

But dont worry you are doing a great job with her and the babies...

Also the formula helps keep the milk flowing

any more help you can email me i will be pleased to help i have bred 12 litters of strong healthy german shepherds with only 2 fatalities which was due to the mother acidently lying on them during the night..

Hi Mike, and all.... as usual you gave me what I needed...Thanks! She was wormed, but it was about 6 months ago. It sounds like I should have it done again. Yes? I will do the fomula, I wanted to do that, but wasn't sure if I should. She has dry food all the time, boiled chicken morning and night, as well as treats.

She is a mini dauchshund who just had puppies.(5)

Thanks agian for all the help! Sincerely, Susan

Oh and the puppies are soooooooooo cute! will have to figure out this camera, so I can post pics.....

Hi Susan. I am so glad that she is getting better and she is gaining weight again.

The formula is specially made for orphaned puppies so you can imagen all the fats and protiens in it combined with the chicken she is eating and the formula she is drinking she will be back to her normal weight withing a couple of days...

good luck and hope all is well
