Okay, I confess that I only love Poms because they are so darned cute. But I have also heard they are wonderful little dogs. I wanted a Pom when we first got married, but my husband wouldn't even consider spending a ton of money on a purebred dog, and back then I didn't know anything about rescue.

I have to relate this Pom story.

We were at a friend's house this weekend. It is a guy my husband works with. He told me they have a little dog, and their son and family (who lives with them right now) have a dog as well.

So we are over there playing games and I hear a dog jingle by. I looked under the table but I couldn't see it. Then I heard it come back and I look down and there, staring up at me, was the CUTEST little pixie-fox-face.

Of course, I had to squeal "OooOOoOoo, a Pom!!" I was the only woman there, so you can imagine the looks I got. I smack my husband lightly and say "Why didn't you tell me they have a POM?!" and he stares at me blankly. It's like I was speaking Greek.

Then John, the owner, says "It's not a Pom. I don't remember what it is, but it's not a Pom." You have to realize, he is not a dog person, and the dog is his wife's.

So, I pick the little bugger up and stare at it. It's a Pom. There's nothing else it could be.

When his wife got home, I asked her and of course it's a Pom! Purebred, too, but no papers. Apparently it was their other son's dog (who used to live with them) and when they moved out they couldn't take the dog.

So I ask what his name is, and they say "Simba". Now, those of you who are Lion King fans MUST see the fate at work here. We have a Nala, and here is Simba, a sweet little perfect Pom...

They both said I could have him, but I think the wife was not totally serious. My husband looked at the dog like it was an alien from another planet, but who cares!

Anyway, I can always hope.

The other dog there was named Turbo and supposedly a lab/beagle mix but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was border collie in him. He is named Turbo for obvious reasons. He reminded me of Nala, with his energy level. Naturally, I assumed he was young. When I asked, though, they said he was 8 years old. I am becoming alarmed at the prospect that Nala will still be like that in 8 years, LOL!

They said he was even more wild as a puppy, and it took about 5 years for him to start calming down. And he's still....well, Turbo!

Egads.

Oh yeah, I forgot. They insist that Simba is not so smart. I think "vacant" was the word they used.

I'm not so sure. Could be, but I think he's just VERY enthusiatic about....well, everything! Just a happy, bouncy little critter.

I bet I could teach him stuff!

Well, Simba is 5 years old. There's no way I could handle another puppy right now!

It sounds like she won't part with him.

I'll make sure she knows he will have a great home if she decides she can't deal with him anymore.

Jimaya.....your mind is all cloudy! Go get some fresh air hun. Then ask WHY they say he is "vacant", is he potty trained completely? Does he chew things? Why are the eager to find him a new home? Keep this in mind too...you have an exuberant puppy thats way bigger than a pom...my Poodle gets tromped on enough that he now growls everytime Witt comes near him. We have to lock Witt and Dooley out of the room just so darby can race around and play, if we don't the big dogs get excited and trample all over him, they don't mean to hurt him, they want to play. A friend of mine has a Boston terrier and Witt and her are best buds but it's because she can haul *ss and keep away from his big paws. They play chase. Some small dogs play great with big dogs, some don't and feel threatened. Make sure you try it out first. (then get him, lol)Personally, I think you should get another BC, no sense trying to be sane now.

Actually Maisey, my first thought was that Nala would run roughshod over Simba. But the other dog in that house is as wild as Nala and he is bigger than she is. The two of them seem to get along fine. Of course, I would introduce Nala and Simba first and if it wasn't going to work out, Simba could go back home.

But you are right in that my mind is a bit cloudy. You didn't see his little face!

The most likely second dog will be a Golden. It's what I wanted to begin with, and I'm still not quite sure how I got off track except that puppy fever got a hold on me. I love Nala to death and she is a very good dog, despite a few lingering issues we are working on. She is only a pup and she will get things under control eventually.

But I still want a Golden! I think my husband will let me do rescue. The fosters get first dibs on the dog, so if we foster one who is perfect for our home, it would be a keeper. Otherwise, we could let it go, knowing it was going to a good home.

It's actually what I would have done to begin with rather than adopting a dog from the shelter, but I didn't communicate with my husband and we were both thinking the other wouldn't agree to fostering.

I am trying to restrain myself, however, and wait for Nala to be at least a year old and finished with her basic training. That means I need to proof her on everything and teach her to heel. I have my work cut out for me!

Oh, and to answer the other questions. Only John is eager to get rid of him. He isn't a dog person. His wife jokes about getting rid of Simba, but when push came to shove she wouldn't do it. Any dog requires work and he wasn't theirs to begin with, so that sometimes makes things more difficult.

But she has always had a small dog in the house. Their previous dog was a little mini dachshund. If they didn't keep Simba I'm sure they would get someone else.

Simba does not chew on stuff. He doesn't have accidents. I really think they say he is vacant because he doesn't know how to do anything. But dogs don't learn if you don't teach. I don't know what Dachshunds are like training-wise, but perhaps since they are calmer dogs they listen better and seem to learn faster?

They told a story about Simba getting loose and they called and called for him and he wouldn't come back. So they opened the garage door to go look for him and there he was, sitting outside the garage door. They thought he was not very smart for sitting there and not figuring out he could go to the front door where they were calling him. I don't take that as proof, myself.

I tried luring him into a sit and a down using food. The biggest problem was that he is spring-loaded and kept bouncing up onto his little feet. I think that is just an excited little dog thing, however. It would probably be easier to teach him to turn in circles up on his hind legs like a circus dog - my son had him doing it before we left that day!

He does have problems with his teeth. Other than that, he seems to be a gorgeous and lovable little guy. And a great lap dog!

Although that would be an issue with Nala - she would have to learn to let him sit in laps. I try to hold her in my lap, but she wiggles and nips. She's just not lapdog material.

Anyway, the point is moot unless she changes her mind about Simba. Did I mention I love that dog?!

LOL you crack me up! That sounded like the argument of the century that you would give your mom! Like an excited teen..."please mom please!"
I was just teasing you, you should have a little lap dog if you want one. I said I am not a small dog person and generally I am not. I always pick out the big dog. But Darby has been a joy and taught me much. He loves to ride in a basket on the front of my bike, which the big dogs couldn't do, he will ride on my horse with me sitting in front of me on the saddle, which the big dogs WON"T do despite all my attempts. I can pick him up in a heartbeat when needed at the park when some loose dog comes running towards us, with the big dogs I can only gain control of my dog and pray. He snuggles like no other dog I have ever met, he doesn't take up much space on the bed or in the truck. He eats less, poops smaller and is easily impressed with small squeeky toys from the Dollar Tree. He has his good points. The bad would be, I hate grooming him, he hates being groomed, his teeth are crap and expensive to care for, at the barn he gets filthy, he attracts burrs and other foreign things that like to trap themselves in his ears and hair. He doesn't like to swim, if he gets stepped on by a horse...he's toast. It all depends on what you want in a dog, what your interests are and fate. I would have never gone looking for a Poodle, my mom bred and showed them when I was growing up and they just never were as appealing to me as a herding dog or big dog. But Darby came into our lives and I believe it was meant to be.

That story made me laugh when you were describing your husband's reactions. Very well put!!!! My boyfriend is the same. If it's not a pitbull he wouldn't know another breed especially a pom!! He would just shake his head and say "What the hell is that?"!!! They are extremely cute though and the smallest little face!!!

My husband loves Darby, absolutely and completely....but he doesn't want the general population to know that. He says Darby is "froo froo" and a "girly dog", Darby is a white Poodle. When the kids were small we had one of those seats for the back of your bike for babies or toddlers to ride in. Shawn and I were out riding on a popular city trail one weekend without the kids...just Darby. He usually rides in an old fashioned basket I found at a garage sale and put on the front of my bike(white with the pink plastic roses vined across the front...also deemed "froo froo" by my husband)Well on this day I had a seizure while we were in a park, just a small one, but they take alot out of you and I was afraid of crashing my bike with darby and him getting hurt so I asked my husband to put the basket on his bike just in case. He was horrified and adamantly refused. He did however suggest Darby sit in the baby seat on the back of his bike. I didn't think Darby would stay in it, but Shawn buckled him in, yes I said he buckled him in, just like a baby, and then he walked along with the bike to make sure he would stay, and he did! Shawn was very proud of his solution and rode along happily, actually tickled to death....UNTIL another person on a bike could be seen approaching in the distance. Shawn stopped suddenly, quickly took Darby out of the seat and shoved him in my basket.
He didn't want anyone to think it was HIS froo froo dog! As soon as the person had passes us, Shawn stopped and took Darby, explaining to him that it was "nothing personal" "I love you and all...but". It's the same thing with going for car rides, Shawn won't take him alone, one of the girls or I have to be present. MEN! All that really matters is that he does love him. It's a big joke in our family, everyone knows Shawn loves him, he just isn't gonna admit that he is crazy about a "froo froo" dog.
Shawn has recently gotten pretty good at making out the different breeds of dogs, a side effect of me and my gabbing with others about their dogs I suppose.

Maisey, you tell the funniest stories! I enjoy reading what you will come up with next. You crack me up!!!!

Jamiya, I have a duachshund. They are a little hard to train, but that's only because they are very stubborn dogs. She's fully trained now, Thank Goodness! But I love her personality, she thinks she's it and more!!! which she is "of coarse" Susan

That reminds me of mum and dad's maltese terrier Casper, my dad loved casper and loved to walk him everyday until one day at the beach a bunch of teenagers yelled out "Look at grandpa walking his poofy dog!" That was the end of Dad's walking days with Casper. Me and mum had walking duties after that.
