Hi, I have had my dog for about 1 year but he has started chewing on all of the furniture! I don't know what to do. Should I take him to the vet? Is there something wrong with him? He just started this recently. He has never done this before, that is why he is an inside dog. I don't want to throw him out. What should I do? Please HELP, my house is suffering! IP: Logged |

Hi Keila, Experience tells me your dog is bored...You don't mention the breed but usually boredom is the case. I finally broke my dog's chewing habit by getting another dog. It worked almost instantly. Good luck IP: Logged |

As mentioned boredom is a huge factor among other things like separation anxiety, which is fairly common, especially if there has been a change in daily/weekly routine or if owners are usually home and then work or other commitments cause them to be home less. Also key reasons are lack of stimulation and lack of exercise (as relates to boredom). Maybe your dogs exercise requirements have changed and now needs more, or is not getting enough mental stimulation. Some dogs go through a second "teething" type stage anywhere from 8 months to 2 years old and some just digress - meaning time to get out the crate and working on some more training. If you search the archives on "separation anxiety" or "boredom" you'll find some helpful suggestions and links. I would definitely consider crating while you can not supervise your dog. Even usual well behaved dogs need a refresher once and a while! good luck! IP: Logged |
