I know this has been discussed here before but I feel compelled to start a new thread about it. After a discussion with my family this weekend and in light of what happened to Maisey's Dooley I called today to ask about pet insurance. The cost of the insurance is based on what state you are calling from in the USA and the age of your pet and type of pet. For us it will be $364 a year. This will cover $215 towards routine visits, flea control and heartworm medicine and will cover 85% - 90% of any office visit where the pet is sick or injured as well as covering the prescriptions and treatments. Since you would pay the $215 either way, if you follow me, we are only paying $10 a month for the chance that something happens to our dog. I honestly could go back and forth on it but $120 a year doesn't seem like a lot in cases where you could spend thousands of dollars on an injury or illness.

Just wanted to keep people informed in case it is something you were considering.

I am confused, you said it is $364 a month for insurance, but it is only 215.00 per year.

If it only $215.00 per year and it covers routine exams and heartworm medicine that is a grea deal.

I had pet insurance thu VPI, it was $35.00 per month and that only covered if something happened, not basic wellness care

Your too quick for me I was reading it and noticed I made a mistake typing so I edited it.. it is $364/year.

Also it only covers $215 towards the routine visits/heartworm/fleas. We use that Revolution stuff that is $12/month so we still would be spending money out of pocket.

Check carefully into exactly what is covered and what is NOT. I went through this, I used to have insurance, twice they did not cover things that I thought they should have. The policy I had and some others that I looked at also would not cover the same thing twice. For instance, my Poodle getting struvite crystals. If you dog developes something chronic, they may cover the first instance, but none thereafter. After much struggle with the company we had and looking into other companies I decided to set up an account for the pets. I put a certain percentage of my check into this account and it just sits there gaining interest until needed. It could also be used for my horse or the cats, whoever or whatever needed it. Thats just my personal experience. I urge you to look closely at the policy, it may make sense for you and your situation, just make sure you know what it will NOT cover.

My boyfriend and I just have a normal savings account that we put money in each week for emergencies of our pets, children and anything else that crops up. We have a certain limit that we agreed to not go under so there is always money there. I realise that not everybody can do it that way but it only takes a little put aside each week and it's amazing how fast it accumulates! That is the key!! To put away a small amount that you won't really miss week to week, and it really does help in the long run as we've discovered, having recently paid for a hefty vet's bill!
