I have a puppy that I recieved just a few weeks ago. For the first few days it was eating fine, but then it began to refuse to eat. I have tried all sorts of things to get the puppy to eat. But, nothing seems to help. I have taken her to the vet, and they gave me a prescription, but this has not helped. It has been two weeks and my dog is still not eating. I have tried to force-feed the dog, but I still feel that the puppy is not recieving enough food. I am stumpted, and have no idea what to do. I am afraid that if we do not get her eating soon that she is going to die. If you have any suggestions to get her to eat, please let me know. Any methods of making a puppy want to eat, or anything.

Hi Jennifer,

How old is your puppy? What kind of puppy? What did the vet give her a prescription for? and have you been back to let the vet know it hasn't changed her wanting to eat. Is the pup drinking water? What are trying to feed her? Have you tried other foods or methods for feeding it?

My puppy is 10 weeks old, and is a beagle. I did call the vet back, but he acted as if there was nothing else that I could do. He told me that in short of giving the dog a prescription he could not help. And, suggested that I keep trying to force feed her. She was eating puppy chow when she first came home. Now I try to get her to eat anything. I bought soft dog food, she ate it the first day and then not again. I even resorted to giving her vienna sausages because she would actually eat them. And, instead of water I am now giving her watered down milk in an effort to keep her nutricious some. I am considering formula to get it some nutrients. Please help!!!

So the vet said there was no reason he could find for her to not be eating? What prescription did he give you? and what was it for? Did he say there was nothing wrong with her?

You have to get water down her, I don't recommend replacing the water with milk.

When we took her in the vet gave a script for stomach aches. He thought that she had an upset stomach, but now he thinks that it is depression. If it is depression then I do not know what we can do. The breeder said that she was eating fine before they gave her to us. But, for all I know she has had an eating promblem since she was taken off her mothers milk. I am just looking for any helpful hints that might get her to eat. Someone had suggested that I give her chicken soup, and honey...do you think that this is a good idea. Right now I will try anything. And, I think that she wants to eat. When she is out playing, she will walk around the kitchen trying to eat crums off the floor. So she knows that she needs to eat, could it be that she does not like her food. And, she ate cereal off the floor, should I give her that. I think that eating the cereal would be better than not eating at all, but my husband said that that could be bad for her. I just dont know what to do. Please help if you can!!!

I don't know if it's Maisey's Food for thought but I thought I heard that feeding rice and chicken is good for dogs that are sick or won't eat, maybe someone can expand on that or say for sure.

On another not, have you only tried the one food? I would suggest going and buying at least a couple of those small bags of food and testing them till you find one your dogs likes. I don't think thye cost too much and could just be that she just doesn't like the food you have. What food is it?

Now I wouldn't swear to this but, I heard that if you mixed plain yogurt in with the puppies food, it will help it's tummy. Plus alot of other things...I hear it's good for them. You may want to try baby food mixed in his or her food also, I don't reccomend that you give it to the pooch by it's self, because that trains bad eating habit's and can get expensive. Plus I don't think it would be too good for him or her in the long term, but in the short term, it might work. Will keep reading to see how the pup is doing. Sincerely, Susan

Oh I forgot one thing...I agree HE MUST DRINK WATER.... Milk will give him the runs,,,sorry couldn't think of any other way of saying that....hehehehe

I took some advice from a website, and gave my dog honey to boost its sugar and gave it some baby food. To my surprise she threw up, which turned out to be a good thing. It turns out that she has worms. And, although this is not great news, I atleast know that she will not die from starvation, and that her promblem is fixable. Now, I am wanting to know what you all think that I should do regarding the worms. It is Friday, and the dog will not be able to go to the vet atleast until Monday. Is it possible to fix the promblem with dewormer, or do we need to take her to the vet?

Your problem is most likely from worms. Please take him to a vet ASAP. Home remedies probably won't work from this severe a case.

hey there Jennifer,

Get her to another vet. The 1 that you described does'nt sound too knowledgable. I mean come-on, "worms", this is a very basic/general problem in young puppies, especially if it has anything to do w/ eating & the digestive system, P L E A S E. I recommend to change your doggies vet ASAP. Take him in on Monday. I recommend that you have a professional do this, from the way it sounds, it seems pretty severe. A vet will be your best bet in diagnosing what type of worms & any other problems, & treatment. Good-Luck.

i too would bring her into the vet. i dont think that a over the counter dewormer is going to pack enough of a punch to get rid of the worms if that does turn out to be the problem. i think i would leave the health of my pup in the hands of professionals. (preferably one better than the vet you are seeing now.) good luck!

I'm sorry for your loss.
If it was a worm problem than you should notify the breeder as soon as possible as worms are usually passed down from the mother. The littermates should be checked out too. It sounds like she had too many worms that were raging in her stomach. The breeder of these dogs should know that worming a puppy from 2 weeks of age, 4 weeks,6 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks will stop what just happened to your pup. That is irresponsible breeding!!

GoodboysBaddogs is right, change your vet! A trustworthy vet would have made sure what was wrong with the pup BEFORE give her a script for medicine, He may have contributed to the problem!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that the pup didn't make it.....I'm sooooooooooo mad at that "so called" vet that you took him to. You would think he would have known what to look for. I hope that you are o.k. nothing like the loss of a pet...so so sorry!!!!!! Sincerely,Susan
