I saw what I thought was flyball, dogs jumping over little walls to the end of a run and grabbing a ball stuck to the wall. Is this flyball and if so, why is it called that since the ball is not in the air

Flyball is a dog sport that is rapidly becoming very popular. It is very much like a relay race with four dogs on a team. Your dog is released at a start line, jumps over four jumps to a box that is spring loaded with a tennis ball, the dog hits the box which ejects the ball, the dog catches the ball and then runs back over the jumps to the line where the next dog is released. The team of four dogs who complete this run in the fastest time wins that race.

Check out this link to my teams site, there are video clips you can watch so you can see the action. Dooley has some video clips there as well. Most of the clips were taken at an informal practice session between several teams, so it is not an actual tournament. http://www.flyball.com/x-fidos/

Here are some other links for you to check out too...all about flyball!

Shawn and I have had a great time meeting new people and playing this sport with Dooley. Dooley is a complete addict for flyball! It could be called flyball because the ball is ejected out of the box...or because your dogs pretty much fly through the course. It seems to me that Dooley barely touches the ground when he goes.

Maisey I had so much fun looking through the site for your fly-ball team. Max went a little nuts when I played Dooley's videos (the barking in the background) although I didn't get to see the picture only the sound came through. Oh well I'll poke around again after cleaning house and see if I can get to work. But great job and kudos for your organization.

I am only ON the team...I didn't design the web site, one of my team members did, I love it though and think she did an awesome job. She also used a picture of Dooley to design team logos for our shirts and other stuff, I was very suprised when i saw the design...and of course I was thrilled. Now I'll be spending way too much money on Cafe Press ordering one of everything with my dog on it!

I need to move to Portland.

I went and didn't have any trouble with the videos...I did however notice that the AOL media player was opening behind the web site page, if my screen had not been minimized to a smaller size, I wouldn't have known it was behind it and would have only heard the sound. Do you guys have a media player of some type? have you watched videos elsewhere? http://www.brisbeethewhite.com/id441.htm

PS the video clips also stop halfway through and then continue.

Casey is a little girl Schipperke(SP?)and she is my flyball captains dog. She thinks it is ALWAYS her turn, she yaps and yaps, she is very insistent. I call her spider dog or Batgirl...she looks like a bat or hairy spider. She was in a very unhappy home before she found her place with her mom now.
We have a real variety of dogs on our team, I would say Harpo is my favorite, he is comical, really lovey and snuggly, not afraid to tell the big dogs to back off but he will play with them on their level. He is just so happy go lucky. Our team is not terribly competitive, we are pretty new and most of us really are there to have fun with our dogs first. Honey bear....several of the dogs on my team, don't get along with other dogs. Kiwi can be pretty nasty sometimes and Casey will go after the big dogs and bite them in the butt if we run her next to one. Our captain is really good about matching teams and the order they run in to avoid issues. We have all kinda learned each others dogs quirks, likes and dislikes and we work around them so that everyone has a good time. We also keep them on leash except when they are running, they are trained to come directly back to you, they even have "catch" handles on their harnesses. Sure, sometimes they run off or across lanes, thats to be expected, but we are all pretty careful.

Oh yeah! Honeybear...on the site, the dog Poco is the one I was telling you about that doesn't eat much, and her owner is the one who designed the web site. Fenwick is also her dog, I get a kick out of him!

We have Windows Media Player, I got it to work on my laptop..my hubby says I need to download an updated version for my desktop. But anyways.. from the poor quality of my laptop, looks really neat!! I looked into flyball in our area but the closet club is 2 hours away. I would like to get involved in some activity with Max, maybe we'll try agility or tracking

Our practices are usually a 40 minute drive, and most of the tournaments are either in Washington near the Canadian border or in Canada. My husband and I use it as an excuse to spend time alone together (without the girls) I got Witt with the hopes that he would be my flyball dog, but I don't know if it's gonna be his thing. No matter, I have a list a mile long of things I want to do with him.
Weight Pull, Therapy work, Rally O, agility, carting...anything fun I want to try!

Cali I enjoyed looking at the pictures on your site, especially the box turns. Dooley is very fast, but he needs to learn a good swimmers turn, we are working on that goal. We actually have our own box at home, my husband is making new jumps and then we will practice with him in the arena where I ride my horse through the winter. Our team practices once a week, but Dooley wants to practice every day! lol.
