first off i would like to thank everybody for their input on my last post. very helpfull. ok heres the problem... my now 8 week old aussie shepherd is *going* in her cage and then pretty much rolling around in it on a regular basis. i have the smallest pet taxi available for her and she really dosent have more than the recommended room(able to stand turn around and thats it) yet every time i put her in there about an hour later i assume she dumps the load. mind you this is right after several trips outside with successfull results. i realy dont know what the problem is but im sure a bath once or twice a day is terrible for her coat and skin... and i have heard of the ear infection problem that can go with it. any insight as to why this might be happening would be greatly appreciated. thank you again to all. steve. OHH Steve, Yuk...not much fun huh. Just some ideas...Do you mean she poops in her cage right after you put her in it? or is she doing it sometime in the hour that she is in there? Try making sure she goes poo when you have her outside, it may seem like an eternity of waiting because you are just standing there, but it shouldn't take too long for her to go. BIG PRAISE when she does. Then put her in her kennel. Make sure you wash the kennel with bleach and rinse well after she has poo'ed in there. Getting rid of the smell. This is gross, but when she does poo in her kennel, take the poo outside to the spot where you want her to go and leave it there. She will smell it and associate this spot with her "potty spot". Use a shampoo that is gentle on the skin and maybe fins a skin conditioner for her to prevent any drying. As far as the ear infections...my Witt has extremely small ear canals so if while bathing him we get water in them, it usually does cause a problem. You can either bathe all of her except her head and wash her head and face after her bath with a wash cloth, or when you are getting her head wet, place your fingers over the outside of her ear leather and press it to her head enough to keep water from getting into her ear canal. After her bath use a dry wash cloth to wipe any moisture off her ear flap on the inside, but don't stick anything down into the ear...just what you can reach with your big fingers. =) I don't know what to say about her rolling in it....Witt will roll in the horse poop at the barn on occasion, I've learned to watch him and tell him no when I can see he is thinking about it. If he actually does it before I catch him, I bring him up to the barn and spray him down with the hose, which he hates. Maybe thats why he hasn't done it in a while, he may have figured out that he is not getting in my truck with his brand of perfume on and has to have a bath first. Stay with the basics of potty training a puppy and be consistent, hang in there! Maybe someone else has some better advice??? IP: Logged |

Could this be due to separation anxiety, perhaps?

Does she sleep in her kennel? In order for crate training to work she needs to sleep in her kennel. I had this problem with one of my guys and once he started sleeping in his kennel the waste problem stopped. Will she go potty in front of you? IP: Logged |

I crate trained and Max didn't sleep in his kennel. Are you sure that she is going within one hour that you leave her in there? You said you assume is why I'm asking. . IP: Logged |

I just re-read the post too... if she is being left in the kennel for one hour, it may be too long for her yet at just 8 weeks. I'm lucky enough to be home most of the time, so my pups were out to potty every thirty minutes at leaste, I got both of my pups at 9 weeks of age, both stayed in a kennel for several hours at night while we slept without having accidents in it, so I'm not sure. I would make sure she does #2 before you put her in there though. IP: Logged |

thanks to all for helping.. lets see if i can be more specific... she goes poop when shes outside then i put her up for the night.. this is when the majority of the problem comes in. no i dont have an exact figure on how long it takes her to go poop in the cage somewhere between when i go to bed at midnight and wake to take her out at 4: in the morning. yes also she sleeps in the crate as well. kind of confusing for me cause i would think she would hate to sleep in her own poo.. but she will not bark to wake me up to tell me she soiled herself.. she only starts barking when she hears the alarm go off.. just feel bad for her is all. quite a nasty experience for me and her.. not frustrated with it though just would like to make it stop for both our sakes.. thanks again to all.. really appreciate the input. steve IP: Logged |

Sounds like the 4 hours is too long for her to wait to go, and it could be you are feedng her too close to bed time too. Honeybear IP: Logged |

Gosh steve, you are so easy going! I would be freaking out lol, I have issues with just picking the poop up at the park...if my hubby is there I make deals with him, anything if he will pick it up! I will do it when I have to, but I really really really don't like it. A whole kennel and dog covered with it...I might go into convulsions! Kudos to you for your patience and williness to find a solution. IP: Logged |

I agree with honeybear it sounds like you are just waiting too long to take her out. UGGH thinking back to when we first got Max at 8 weeks we were up every hour or so. m I honestly think it's easier for women because we have that light motherly sleep thing hehe.. but everytime I heard him stir I would take him out. It was very annoying but didn't last long. My husband and I didn't expect too much on the house training thing until Max was 4 months old. When we left during hte day we gated him on a tiled area of our house and when we came home we simply picked up his messes and went on with it. By 4 months old he was ready to hold it for a significant period of time and that's when we started crate training him. Now at 6 months he is almost completely house broken. I wouldn't expect too much too soon. Also like honeybear said we always fed max at 5 and took away his water by 8. IP: Logged |
