Hello
I have always wanted a big dog. and i am talking about the XL dogs like the great dames, mastiffts, great pyerness, st.banrads etc. I am not going to get one in the near future, i still have to work out some issues with my doggie and have to get a biger place so the dog will be more comfortable. but still wanted some info on them. I have done alot of internet research and found only really great things about them. I feel in love with the "big dogs" when i babysat an English mastiff. he was one of the sweetest dogs i have every met in my life. I have heard the because of their size they have med. problems with their stomach and things like that. so if anyone has any advice on them, let me now. i want to know what its like actually owning one of those gaints!!!thanks

I have never owned a big dog so I can't help you with firsthand experience, but don't forget to look into Bernese Mountain Dogs and Irish Wolfhounds. I love those dogs!

Also, feeding an XL breed correctly is very important. A lot of puppy foods "grow" a large dog too quickly which contributes to all sorts of problems with bones and joints. Some foods are made with Large Breed formulations now, and some breeders of large dogs recommend feeding regular adult food from about 4 months.

Check out this site for Burnese Mountain Dogs: http://www.wilpowerkennels.com and then click on the "Food Choices" link to read about feeding a huge dog.

Glad to see you are doing research and preparing yourself first!

Those are really pretty dogs! I am a big hound dog person. I love their faces and their personailties, but i totally fell in love with the larger breeds once i got to interact with some. most XL dogs i have met have been the sweets things, they all want to be lap dogs! I just want to make sure a bigger dog is right for me. special care goes into different breeds, i jst want to make sure i can give he or she the best home! Right now all i have is a beagle. THe best dog i have had is a red tick coon hound. she was about 60 pounds, but yet another hound dog! thanks for replying!

Well i'd say try narrowing down your favorite XL breeds & do deeper reasearch on care & maintenace. You should not only research on the net, you should try to also pick up some books on them at your local public library.
As far as XL goes, i own an AB (American Bulldog). And a Giant-Size Chinese Shar Pei... LOL! J/K, theirs no such thing. I also have a miniature Chinese Shar Pei. My AB is not quite their in the poundage of XLargness, but he's still growing, AMAZINGLY!! He's now a solid 95lbs at 15 months. I'm giving him untill 18 mo's untill i'd say he'd probably stop growing. He'll probably max out around a healthy/solid 105-110lbs. If you don't know, FYI, male-"Johnson/Bully"-type AB's max out from 85-120lbs. Which is basically, i'd say the "beginning" poundage of XL breeds-- 120+lbs.
I love BiGG-DoGGies too! Mastiffs are way-cool!! Particularly (sp?) Bullmastiffs, & Bordeaux's... Y E A H ! ! !
Yeah, that's R E A L L Y good that your prepairing yourself for a brighter future w/ 1 of these awesome breeds. Knowledge ALWAYS helps the experiance. I'm sure you know, sadly, but XL's "generally" don't live as long as other breeds. I know, and feel like there is a way around this... hmmmmm....

I met my first bullmastiff the other day. totally fell in love with her. she was just a puppy and already sooo big!!! I was dead set on getting her, had a name picked out and everything, but when i got home and thought about it, i waited. i live in an apartment right now, which is fine for my beagle, but would be horrible for the bullmastiff, or any larger breeds for that matter! so once i get a house with a back yard i am totally going to get my gracie (the name i picked out for the bullmastiff!!!!)
