My six month old female APBT (Saige) just went into her first heat five days ago. She is not bleeding much however her vagina is ALMOST the size of a tennis ball. Is this at all normal? Another thing is that she has one treatment of Mitaban left that the vet said I should give her just to be sure- I do not feel right giving this to her where she is in heat and licking herself. The vet says it is alright, however her scrapings are negative, should I wait til she is out of her heat so that she does not lick the Mitaban? Anything you all can share with me is a great help.. In advance.. Thank you to all of you who respond to this, I sincerely appreciate all of the help that everyone has been to me since I have joined Auspet... Angie IP: Logged |

Hi when a bitch is in heat her vagina does become swollen some dogs more than others... Not all dogs bleed during there heat some bleed alot some just a little spotting.. bitches are very paticular about there private parts and like them to be perfectly clean so her licking she wont show as much... I wouldnt say there was anything to worry about this is your dogs first heat and everything sounds fine.. Does your dog have mites as Mitaban is used to treat them so treatment should not harm the dog in anyway when she is cleaning herself.. IP: Logged |

I had a bitch for 13 years and other than her very swowllen 'bit's' and the odd dog chasing me when I was walking her I'd have never known she was in heat. She'd clean herself up so well there wouldn't be a spot anywhere... untill she got older. Even then it was a few spots here n there but nothing major. She'd have licked up any spots by the time I got back with the disenfectant. IP: Logged |
