We have a 3 yr old lab and just got a baby boxer (2 mo). The lab growls at the boxer and pushes her around. Is this behavior acceptable? what can I do to get the dogs to get along? IP: Logged |

Don't push it, take it gradually. Keep the dogs separated when not supervised and encourage appropriate behavior with positive reinforcement and treats when they are around each other. It could take some time. You need to make sure your lab does not feel pushed out of rank, and your pup understands that he is safe, but part of a family pack. Dogs usually work these things out in their own time, but it is your responsibility to make them both feel safe, and loved by giving them your attention and showing them appropriate interaction, reinforced with love and treats. I would not let your lab push the pup around- remove your pup from the attention of your lab when he acts this way, and make sure your pup feels safe. I would take it very slow. Separate the two, but give your lab time to adjust by letting him sniff your pup while in his kennel and keep their interaction short and sweet for now, working up to longer periods of togetherness, reinforcing the good behavior and not letting things get out of control or one-sided. They need to work some of this out on their own accord, but let them know just as you would your own children, that they are both loved and respected for their own individual personalities. Give your lab time to adjust, but also give your pup what it needs, without feeling threatened or insecure around your lab. IP: Logged |
