My boyfriend and I got a puppy a week ago, he started showing symptoms of being ill on Sunday. I took him to the vet on Monday, he got worse they told me nothing was wrong with him and it was most likely stress. I took him to another vet yesterday and he is in the ICU with them. It's now Wednesday and he is still "dry heaving" a clear foamy liquid. They gave me a quote between 2 and 4 thousand dollars with no concrete answers, if he will make it or not. I love my little Gizmo and I'm torn. I don't want him to suffer, I don't want to lose him....?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The vet he is at was highly recommended by everyone in the area. IP: Logged |

Do a search on this forum for "parvo" because I know there have been discussions about it in the past. You might also search the web in general. I am sorry to hear about your little guy, and I hope he pulls through!

Thank you so much for any and all info...I've been disinfecting the entire house, along with shoes and clothing so when my little guy comes home (knock on wood) he will be safe. If anyone has any further advice or help to offer we would greatly appreciate it. My email address is Sunflr31@aol.com IP: Logged |

It does sound like parvo although if it is a very young pup it would most likely be dead by now as Parvo kills within 2 days. It is hard to prevent your dog getting parvo as it exists in the ground for up to 6 or 7 years after the dog has gone. It is very important for pups to have their first shots around 6-8 weeks and keeping the pup away from dog stools and even other dogs for two weeks after its shots will lessen the chance of Parvo infecting the pup. My neighbour got a lab/staffy mix for free 2 years ago. He asked whether or not the pup had had it's shots and was told it had so he brought the dog home (in winter) the following summer when the dog was about 6 months old he contracted Parvo and died 3 days later of an agonising death, vomiting grass and at the end blood. He died in his owner's lap because there was no vet available to come to the house. My dog was fine living right next door as she had had all her shots. It is a terrible thing to have to go through and thats why it's important to get their shots. Nobody should give away or sell a pup without it! If you buy a pup that has had it's shots make sure that the seller has proof. If not, look around for one that has. Oh also, Parvo is most deadly in the summer months. Good luck to you and your pup and I hope everything is fine. IP: Logged |

What about kennel cough. It could be that. If your pup has not collapsed already then it may not be parvo. With kennel cough they cough up white foam. If it sthis then all he needs is antibiotics. ------------------ IP: Logged |
