We have recently adopted a female Albino Doberman from a local shelter.She's between 1 & 2 yrs old. She's small for her breed, due to malnutrition & constant breeding. She is however purebred. Her ears have been cropped, (it's obvious), but they have fallen. Is there any way to make them stand, without surgery? She's a beautiful girl & I love her no matter what. Her ears just look really funny right now. Because she's albino, she doesn't really look like a Dobie,with her ears laying down. She looks just like one when they stand up. Any ideas on how to make them stand again???Thanks a million to anyone with suggestions. IP: Logged |

I have ZERO experience in this, but I did a quick search and found this link: http://www.doglogic.com/ears.htm that provides some examples of cropped great dane ears and a link to taping ears. However, it would probably be best to check with a vet before trying anything, especially since the link that provides info on taping is for aftercare that shortly follows surgery. It says that most pups will have their ears up correctly be 6 months, and your dog is at least twice that age. Again though, I don't have any knowledge about cropping, so I defer to the experts.  I'd think that a quick visit to the vet for a checkup would be helpful though, especially after getting any new dog! IP: Logged |

I think that if the dobe has not had its ears taped up. With the cup to hold them in place they will droop. So your probably was just clipped but not cupped. I know of a dobie person, she has one and knows all about them on another site I will go and get a link to the forum and put it in my post. The ears won't stand. Aftercare of cropped ears is an art - if the ears aren't posted for the first couple months of their lives, the ears will droop forever. There are surgeries available that will make the ears stand, but they aren't worth it. Many are dangerous, and you could risk losing the ear altogether. My breeder has a dog that has a droopy ear - it stood until she went into her first heat, and never stood again. This didn't stop the dog though... she went on to be one of the top dobes in the AKC, has her CD, has placed BISS (Best in Specialy Show) many times... and just won Best Veteran at a show about a month ago... she's 10 years young! IMO, you should enjoy your girl - with droopy cropped ears. You may also want to watch hewr in bright sunlight, and put sunscreen on her. Albinoes are notorious for sunburns... and a high occurence of skin cancer. Kudos for rescuing her! ALSO - don't always listen to what vets have to sa about cropping... most vets know nothing about cropping. A local vet just cropped a 3 year old great dane... which is HORRIBLE. The ears wil never stand, and the dog's ears are too developed for cropping... dogs over 13 weeks are not supposed to be cropped... but the vet did it anyway. Your best bet is to talk to show people... they know best when it comes to their coveted cropped ears! IP: Logged |

Hi justme: Oskar, my 3 1/2 month old boxer has his ears cropped on Jan. 19. He wore the cone for 2 weeks. His first taping, we tried the ear stays where you glue them to the inside of ears, then wrap a fine piece of tape going all the way across. The glue would not hold no matter how many times I tried gluing!! Now, we are trying the "rack" method by where there is a metal frame and foam base that rests on top of his head. He has done a little better with this method, but still manages to get the foam base completey flipped upside down! Help! Any suggestions? How long should it take for his ears to stand alone? And, should it be permanent? I'm thinking to order one of those kits but am afraid the glue will not hold? Thanks for any suggestions! IP: Logged |
