Hello! My little dauchsund has a weird looking belly button. It is like a little outtie belly button and you can push it back in and it comes back out. It's kind of big too for a little puppy. My breeder said if you keep pushing it back in, eventually it will go away. She is only 11 weeks. We are going to take her to the vet in a week or so. But, do any of you have any experience with this if you have breed puppies? Curious? Can this cause a problem with her intestines? What if it is a problem...how should I approach the breeder if it is a problem? Thanks ~ Melissa IP: Logged |

It sounds like a hernia to me, I know puppies do get these sometimes, I had a puppy with one and it did heal on it's own. I also know that sometimes a hernia can be a dangerous thing. You should have your vet look at it when you go in and ask his advice. In the meantime you could do a search on "puppies with hernias" and see what you can learn. I can't help you with the breeder part of your question...but I know several people here can offer an opinion. IP: Logged |

It does sound like an umbilical hernia, which is really not uncommon in pups. I would check with the vet just to be sure, let the breeder know what it was (sometimes they're caused by the cord not being removed right, or in some cases I've heard they are genetic), just so that they know, and can maybe reevaluate their practices if it's something they have frequently. My dog had one of those when we got her at 8 months of age, and we had it removed when she was spayed. The vet did a very good job, and there was only one tiny incision for both jobs. You might check with your vet to see if they want to remove it that way if it needs to be taken out. [This message has been edited by goob (edited 10-28-2003).] IP: Logged |

I'm probably talking out my hind end here...lol, maybe I'll learn something new. I thought a hernia was a tear in the stomach wall that allows the intestines to protrude. For some reason it sticks in my head that sometimes mother dogs chew the umbillical cord too close causing the tummy wall to split slightly. Other times it's caused by straining of some sort. Am I in the ball park? IP: Logged |
