What parts of the pumpkin can I feed to my dog, I assume raw is fine? My daughter carved hers tonight and it was war trying to keep the dogs away from the guts. How much is too much for them to eat?

LOL, I wish I could help, who knows if they eat too much they may end up with runs. I know its good for constipation, but not sure of what the outcome would be given as much as they like.

I am confused about this ...I saw on the same web site the recommendation of using canned pumpkin for diahrrea and for constipation. Which is it!? I have been looking and looking for the answer to my question and all I see are very general statements or it's about canned. I did learn the seeds are what is good for ridding your dogs of parasites but nothing that tells you how much, how often or if they should be raw or dried! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
It's not a big deal really...but it will bug me now until I get the answers, I can't help it LOL. Maybe I should research OCD in humans???

I've heard both recommendations for canned pumpkin too. I think it may be the fiber in it??? When one of my dogs was having a little trouble with constipation, my vet recommended about a tablespoon of pumpkin. It worked! Incidentally, he's about 12 pounds.

Pumpkin is fine to give but in moderation to be safe..... Exact amounts? Depends, I generally give pureed veggies that have been mixed together - don't use pumpkin in my mix but do use squash and zucchini with other veggies. Have used Pumpkin for both the big D and constipation, worked well. I've found a couple of tablespoons is sufficient for what I needed it for. Amount will depend on the individual dog (size, problem etc).

Thank you all, I was able to get this much info about the "Big D" (lol Jas) and constipation on another message board.

"raw (including seeds) - but pureed in a blender or food processor.

It works for diarrhea because the fiber absorbs the excess liquid in the intestines and prevents things from moving through the intestines too fast. It works for constipation because it absorbs moisture and helps bulk up and moisten the stool so it DOES move through the intestines.

For weight control, substitute pumpkin (low calorie fiber) for a portion of the kibble - the dog gets the same volume of food but fewer calories.

You can puree and freeze fresh pumpkin in individual portions - I do it in ice cube trays then store the "cubes" of frozen pumpkin in a ziploc bag. That way you can thaw only what you need."

So I guess I shouldn't just let them munch on raw pumpkin pieces. I still want to find out about the seeds in use for deworming. I found a scientific article on a web site for performance horses, but with all the information in it ...an amount to feed was not stated.
Both dogs have been threatening to eat my daughters Jack-O-Lantern, they lick it everytime they pass it.
Happy Halloween!
