hi,

i was playing with my golden retriever pup this morning and all was fine till she tried running after a ball. sue suddenly started limping similar to us when we sprain an ankle. this has happened before and was all right after she rested a little. is this a sign of something more serious to come or am i worrying too much?

How old is your pup and how long ago did the first incident happen? Check her paws and pads thoroughly for anything that might be causing her pain. Keep in mind if she has injured something, it may not be in her paw, it could be elsewhere and it just seems it's her paw.
When my catahoula pup was almost 6 months old he was running towards me at warp speed and when he got to the curb, instead of jumping up onto the sidewalk...he just plowed into the curb. Both front legs folded back under him and he did a chin scraping slide about three feet across the pavement. I was horrified as I watched..but he just jumped back up and continued running to me like nothing happened. I thought..ok, he seems fine, no worries. Later that night, he was sleeping next to me at the computer for quite a while, when he got up he was limping hard and it was obvious he was hurting. I thought he had probably pulled a muscle. I watched him for the next week and he would be fine, playing, roughhousing etc. he would limp a little the more he played. I tried to keep him from playing too much, but noticed that mostly he was limping after getting up from sleeping. By the time he turned 6 months old a couple weeks later, it had not improved at all, if anything it would get worse when he played. When I took him to be nuetered and microchipped I asked my vet to X-ray it while he was out on the table, figured I might as well do it and only have to use anesthetic once. My vet took him outside and observed him a bit, moved and examined his limbs and told me there was no need for an X-ray, he had hyperextended his elbows when he hit the curb, one worse than the other. He said this was like tennis elbow in people and it took time to heal with little activity.(Yeah right!) He told me to give him one people asprin (adult) twice a day with his food to help with pain and inflamation. I did this, and my best to keep him calm and quiet. It took longer than I thought, but he did heal and is fine now. There were times when I had thought he was better, let him play and run all out and then he would start limping again. I would back off again and make him rest. It took a couple months but he is perfectly fine now and thankfully a bit more coordinated.
If this has been happening for a while I would take her in to your vet and have her examined. You will get peace of mind in knowing what the problem is and know what course to take. If it's a simple thing you are only out the exam fee, if it's a bit more serious, it pays to get a jump on treatment. Sometimes it's very important to get immediate treatment, delaying can cause more harm, cost more money to fix and take longer to heal. Hopefully she just stepped on something that hurt her pad and thats it, but I'd say have the vet take a peek. Good luck and let us know how all turns out.

thanks maisey for the info, it's been very insightful. i forgot to mention that my pup is just about 10 weeks old. the first time it happened was just last week and it just happened again this morning. she seems all right now and is running around all fine. but from what you've mentioned, i might just bring her to the vet to have it checked out. thanks again, you've been a great help
