Hi! My husband and I have four cats, and we are thinking about rescuing a chihuahua that was abandoned. I don't know much about this type of dog. I would appreciate any advice!

I know nothing about the type of breed I think it is great you want to give it a home. If no-one responds, do a search under chichauha

Chi's can be very much the one person dog. My neighbors 1 year old barks at us until she can't see us any longer. As with any small dog. If you don't put boundries down and tell the dog basically what it can and can't do they can become very bossy. Sometimes nipping to get their point across. But if you can keep on top of those issues they can be very good pets. They do tend to be kind of high strung. But usually as they age they calm down. I like chi's especially the little apple head ones.

The personality does vary quite a bit from dog to dog. I have always heard they only like other chi's and no other dog breeds, as a general rule. I can't remember about cats - I think they tolerate them.

Some people say they are barkey and mean to everyone but the one person they own. Others say they are really friendly.

Do some research - visit some web sites - read some books. Talk to the people who have the dog now. Is it in a foster home or a shelter? Meet with the dog and see how it behaves, although they can behave strangely in shelters. If it is in a home, talk extensively with the people caring for the dog and find out as much as you can.

Ask yourself what you are looking for in a dog and whether this dog will be the right fit.

My mom has two, a male and a female. Jesse the little male looks just like the ones on the Taco Bell commercials, the other one is a different type and I don't remember the names of those. My mother spoils both of them rotten and we have had several arguments about their behavior at my house, lol. Both of them play really well with my Poodle, the female loves my big dogs but I generally put them in another room when she comes over with her dogs because I am afraid that my big dogs will accidently hurt hers in their excitement. Both of her dogs love my kids. I like them, but would like them more if she didn't spoil them. A trainer that I am taking my pup to also plays flyball with her dogs and we see each other at tournaments all the time. She has two German Shepherds and two Chi's all play flyball. Her chi's are very well behaved and trained and are a joy to be around. Not to mention it is amazing to watch them compete in flyball! Just my personal observation, but it seems like some people with little dogs get caught up in the "awww he's sooo cute" frame of mind and don't ask much in the way of manners from their little dogs. I think they must think they aren't much of a threat cause they are so small. My mother doesn't correct her little brat when he snaps at people, so he does it. She has asked me to "babysit" them on a couple of occasions and I did. They behaved just fine for me, and I expected them to. It's funny, when we go to my moms for dinner...they will beg from her, but they do not from me. They are smart little dogs and know who expects what. At family events such as Christmas, Jessie, the little male will actually follow me around until I sit, he then curls up with me. My mother thinks it is odd since "I am such a meanie to him" translated: I don't let him walk all over me. I think, like kids, dogs appreciate having boundries. I guess what I am saying is, in my experience they are great dogs when taught to be well behaved, but when not kept in check can be little terror dogs with really big bad additudes.

Isn't it hard waiting??? I spent way too much money buying toys and stuffs for my pup before I got him just because I was so excited. I hope it all works out and you end up with a wonderful family companion.

It IS really hard waiting! We have everything prepared, so that is all we can do for now. I feel bad about the poor little thing being trapped in a cage for so many days. Thanks for your good wishes!

I have had my Kiwi for little over 3 yrs. she is so sweet and she never barks, she's wonderful with my children, then about 9 months ago I bought a male his name is Sambo he is alittle more high strung. They both love attention, and they get it to.they are inside dogs, and very loveable.Kiwi and Sambo have just finished breeding and I hope it was a success,I love Chihuahua's and would love to have many more, our's are the mini breed and my mom gave my son a female and she's bigger than either one of mine.Male chiuahua's tend to be bigger than females.I believe you will enjoy your chi.If anyone knows or has heard of a chihuahua rescue group please let me know I would love to help any chihuahua that I can.

My Mom has two Chichauhas and she has two cats. They love the cats! They think the cats are their toys and love chasing them. One of the cats was a humilian (he died, very sad)...but they played all the time together! However, one of the cats is not happy, but she is never happy, a very secluded kitty! They are very sweet animals. They have such big hearts for little dogs and they actually THINK they are big stuff! Very loving animals!

Chihuahua lover, males arent usually larger, and if you breed you should know that you NEVER breed a female to a male that is larger then her!! As for small type chi's. There are only one type of Chihuahua. AKC states that a chihuahua should be no more then 6 lbs. So if you have a dog over that weight it isnt breed standard even if it may be purebred.
Chihuahua's can be so much fun. My little Lucy is just a spoiled little girl. Shes a real lover! She gets along great with my 19 month old, and he knows to be gentle with her. She loves my sisters Pugs also. Make sure you get him a coat or a sweater for these cold winter months. WeePads would be even better so that he doesnt have to go outsie in this cold weather. Thats what we do for our little girl and its working out great.
I'd love to see some pictures when you get some.

Hi! Yes, I picked him up on Monday. I named him Rupert Chipotle. He is getting along famously in the house. Only one of the cats really minds having him around. What a sweet dog he is! He is not nervous or hyper (but he definitely has a lot of energy). He doesn't bark excessively, and he is good with the cats. He loves to say hello to everyone he meets, and he has not shown any aggression, even at the vet. Right now he is sleeping on my lap. He never leaves my side when I am home. He is VERY cuddley. The only problem is that we are working very hard practicing peeing only outside and not all over the house. I hope this is a solvable problem, because he is such a great dog.

If you figure out a method to stop the peeing in the house, let me know. I have that problem with my papillion as well. Good Luck!

Congrats on your new little buddy!

Watch him CONSTANTLY. Bring him outside after he eats, after he plays, and after he sleeps. If he is peeing a lot inside, then bring him outside every 20 minutes or so in addition to those other times. Watch him carefully at all times. If he starts to pee inside, make a loud noise to startle him and bring him directly outside to finish. Whenever he pees outside, use a word like "Go Potty" and praise him AS HE IS GOING - "Gooood potty!" Do this every time.

When you can't watch him or you have to go out, put him in a crate. Make sure it is only big enough for him to stand up and turn around and lie down - no bigger.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I have a 6month old chihuahua. We tried every way to house train him. We walked him every half hour, we put training pads out on the balconey, in the house, and we tried crate training. The only thing that works, is a large crate that fits his bed and a housebreaking pad. Now he will go in there whenever he needs to use the bathroom. It is so easy, I wish I would've tried this first!
