Hello! I'm a new pet owner and new to this site. My little 11 week old dauchsund crys like crazy when I come home at lunch to let her outside to pee. She attacks me and is crying like crazy. Then, when I take her immediately outside she crys and crys and just sits on my foot. I then take her upstairs and eat lunch and she follows me and crys. Then when I put her back in, she crys and trys to get out before I can shut the door. I FEEL SO BAD! She does the same thing when my boyfriend gets home. What should we do? Should we ignore her crying? Please help! I feel like I'm being cruel for leaving her in a crate for 4 hours, lunch and then another 4 hours. She is already in our bed at night b/c we caved when she screamed the first night. But, thankfully, she sleeps all night. I was also thinking of getting a baby gate for the kitchen and leaving the crate door open in the kitchen? Any suggestions? Thanks ~ Melissa IP: Logged |

Puppies always cry alot until they learn that your not going to give in. At the moment your puppy has learnt if you cry you get your own way.. Putting her in her dog bed with a clock or teddy or even something with your scent on will settle her down when your not there or in bed... I must stress that if you keep giving into her as she gets older she will start acting like she is the boss and you do what she wants when she wants... I ignore my puppies when they cry unless its feed time or they need to go out to do there business i know it sounds cruel but i have never had any problems yet, bet i just jinxed myself for when my dogs have another litter heheheh. I know how you feel!!!! it's o.k. the pup will be fine. I loved the advise about the teddy or something with your sent on it. I would do that. I too have a mini d...she is precious! your little one will feel more secure in time, puppies do that....Good luck! Susan IP: Logged |

You could also try a heating pad set on low under her crate. Make sure she can't get to the cord through the bars or anything. I second the teddy bear and blankie (or t-shirt) with your scent on it. My sister did this with their new kitten and he loved his teddy! A ticking clock is also a very good suggestion. Also, not only do they learn they get what they want if they cry, but they also pick up on your emotions. If you are all distressed about the crying and trying to comfort her, she will think "Oh my gosh, there really IS something wrong....and look at all the attention I am getting!" It's better to try and remain calm and ignore her or even tell her "Hush!" (although don't yell it or sound angry). I know it's hard, but she will benefit from the guidance and be happier as a result. Good luck!

Thank you very much for all your suggestions. She's a stubborn little thing, but so terribly cute! Last night I got this little bed and she loves it. I think I'm going to go home at lunch and put it in her crate in stead of the blanket and put one of my tee-shirts in there. We'll see how that works. Also, we are going to go to dinner tonight, so we'll come home let her out, play with her and then put her in the kitchen with the gate and crate door open and see if that helps too?
