Hello, I give my male Maltese puppy a bath once a week, I wipe his bottom every time after he eliminates... He doesn't stink but we can smell an unpleasant odor. Is it his ears, which are hard to clean with him not letting me do it, is it his food, or something else? Do they outgrow it? Please advise... Thanks, Jasmina IP: Logged |

Could it be coming from his face maybe? When I leave a "beard" on my toy poodle he seems to carry an odor which I assume is due to food and water getting on his beard...even after wiping it the odor remains. He looks cute with a little beard but I hate the odor it causes and think I may have it shaved off next time he is groomed. Maybe this is whats happening with your maltese? IP: Logged |

It could be anal glands needing to be expressed. Next time you bring him to the vet have them show you how, or pay them to do it. It is somewhat of a fishy smell. Also if there is an infection in the ear canal it can smell. Here is a good site about the ear powder I use. It keeps my poodle from getting wax in her ears so less cleaning. www.championpets.freeserve.co.uk/ears.htm To purchase it www.championpets.co.uk Its called Thornit ear powder. Only other thing third thing that I can think of is teeth needing to be brushed. Ok, maybe one more. If he tinkles on himself and he does not clean it it can stick. What I do with my male is trim any hair off the tip of his wizzer so he shoots completely straight, unless its really windy. Don't forget to pluck the earhair also. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'm with puttin, have the anal glands checked. Also smell the ears to see if that is where the odor is coming from...... I won't tell you to smell your dogs bum, however, .....  IP: Logged |

There is just the plain old "doggie" smell. Most dogs have an odor. It's just the way they smell. Cats don't. I never understood why one would and the other wouldn't.

Well, he is 3 months old and his teeth, ears and nose look fine. I cannot locate the source of the odor, it's kind of general. Well, I know I have (too) sensitive nose and even parfumes bother me, so maybe I have a problem, not him.  But still, others around me noticed it as well. I assume it's just a natural doggie smell, but I'm wandering is there a way to make it less noticeable?Jasmina IP: Logged |

I still think its is anal glands. Clean his rear and put your fingers at 4 and 8 o;clock around his bum hole. If you feel roundish bulges then they probably need to be released. Expressed is the actual word. My poodle never stink bodywise but when I groom her I guess she doesn't care much for it though she does not act like it. The smell is kind of fishy.. I finally had my vet show me how and he was surprised how full they were. Its icky but nessecary IP: Logged |
