Now that I have been bragging for the last 6 months about Jake being a new dog after I switched him to Innova - well I have a problem. Even though he is ane dog, he is having some new problems like itching and chewing. And I took him to hisd regular vet a few months ago because he know has this black yuk in his lip folds, he scratches and makes it bleed, well my vet said oh it is just "old dog disease" keep it clean with peroxide and put some neosporine on it. Thre has been no change, so I took him to a different vet Sat. She said it is lip fold Pyroderma, and needs to be on antiobotics, she said most likely caused by a food allergy along with his scratching. Innovas main 3 ingredients are chicken, it also has some dairy down the list. But I think it may be the chicken. She also said that they used to think Lamb and rice was good for allergies, but more dogs are becoming allergic to lamb. Of coarse she wants me to put him on Hills allergy food. I looked at the ingredients and the first 3 ingredients are corn. So I said no because I think most of his original problems were due to the corn.

I am looking at solid gold lamb (could also possibly be allergic) and natures recipe

Her is solid gold ingredients
Lamb Meal | Ground Millet | Ground Brown Rice | Ground Barley | Menhaden Fish Meal | Canola Oil | Flaxseed Oil | Rice Bran | Garlic | Amaranth | Blueberries | Yucca Schidigera Extract | Taurine | Carotene | Choline Chloride | Calcium Carbonate | Vitamin E Supplement | Iron Proteinate | Vitamin A Supplement | Zinc Proteinate | Niacin Supplement | Folic Acid | Thiamine | Pyridoxine Hydrochloride | Manganese Proteinate | Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex | Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide |

and Natures recipe Venison Meal & Rice

I can't help you with any personal experience, but I did find these two non-chicken foods:

California Natural Lamb Meal and Rice
Avoderm Lamb Meal and Rice

I know someone on this board loves the Avoderm product, and I believe it eliminated some itchiness and allergy problems.

California Natural is manufactured by the same company that does Innova, so maybe you can find it in your town? (Or the pet store could order it from the same supplier it already uses?)

Good luck, and hopefully others will have more info for you.

How about Natural Balance Potato and Duck formula, it should be easy to find locally, Petco carries it. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/products/PandD.html

Maisey, thanks for the link - I called the feed store - that is supposed to carry it from their web site - the guy never heard of it, but he was going to check into ordering it. ( it is the same place I get the Innova food)

This is what I like about it.

No corn, soy, wheat, eggs, dairy, or sunflower oil. These items, suspect of causing allergic reactions such as hair loss, scratching, hives, tail biting, chewing feet, and ear infections, are not used.

They also have treats in this...I get the rolls, they are like sausage and my dogs go crazy for it. I cut it up into cubes and take it with us to tournaments where they will need a pick me up. I just put it in a ziplock and toss it in my cooler. They have big rolls for around $5.95 and lil bitty ones for .99 cents. Hope it works for your guy.

hi Honeybear,

Switching Jakes food away from any suspected allergin will help in prevention, but not necessarily treatment. I think since your dog already has this problem well established on his chin already, he really might need the oral antibiotics prescription. A good antibiotic for Pyoderm(& open wounds) is Cephalexin. There's 250mg, & 500mg. Your amount is determined by the wait of your dog, & sensitivity to the drug. What kind of dog are you speaking of here, & how old, i must have forgotten. There should'nt really be any sensitivity issues w/ the use of Cephalexin though. Just use as directed by your vet. Possible side-effects are diarrhea, & i can't quite remember the rest (like 1 or 2 other things). Nothing close to serious. Try to keep his "blak yuk" clean. Especially after he eats. Try to let help him drink a good amount after every feeding (of food & antibiotic) to help prevent dehydration, to help aid in absorbtion, & so that he dunks his mouth in freash clean water, to help get the food gunk off. Also be sure to wipe it off clean. Try using a wet paper towel or somthing wet or moist, not dry & rough, that could irritate, & possibly cause unnecessary bleeding. Anything that's anti-bacteria should do even better, as long as it's safe for consumption (somthing like diluted tea-tree oil spray), being that it's his lip-folds. The use of antibiotics (theres a good selection for skin problems, & open wounds) and topical treatment, w/ quality nutrition, like your already doing, should get him back to his good ol' self. It's just consistancy & time.
As far as switching his food... Yeah, Natural Balance-Potato & Duck Formula, Wellness Super5Mix-Fish & Sweet Potato,
Wellness Super5Mix-Lamb & so on... I'm having a situation of my own, & considering switching my Shar Pei's diet too. If it is in his food that's causing his allergies, i've also been suspecting the Chicken.... Good Luck.

goodboys, the vet put Jake on antiobtoics, I dont know which kind. he is a lab that is 6 1/2 years old. He has various ailments over te years and I thought I found a good food with Innova, but I think he is having problems with the chicken. I have been cleaning the area daily with peroxide, I will look into the Wellness brand. Not many choices where I live. You mention Wellness fish. I thought it very strange when the vet suggested a home cooked meal of whitefish and potatos. I had never heard of dogs eating fish.
thanks
