I have a six week old shitzu-poodle mix puppy. He is so smart. He already potties outside when I take him and has few accidents. But, the only problem right now is that he falls asleep around 7:00 or 8:00 pm. and wants to get up and play, etc. at 3:00 am. Should I make him stay awake longer or what? I'm afraid he's in a habit now. Any advice? Should I let him cry it out?

daearly-- My little Saige done that. See I remember when I bred my labs that around midnight they were squirming around in her belly and then around four in the morning. When they were born, those were the times they were awake and crying and squirming. As they got older those were the hours they played. Even when all the pups got homes I kept one and kept close contact with owners. They all said that these puppies were awake at those specific hours ccrying and wanting to play.. it will go away with age. All of my kittens and pups I have ever had done this until they grew a little older and slept longer hours and adjusted to the hours we wnet by as well.

Thank you Angie. I appreciate the reply. A friend here at work even suggested I feed him a little more and keep him up a little later so his hours will be more delayed and then he will be waking up around 5 or at a more decent hour. Thanks again!

My puppy used to do this too. I was right there along with my friends getting up with their babies in the middle of the night. I just made sure I gave him a good walk around 7:30 - 8 and then when he woke up in the morning I would just ignore him. I always make sure he has some type of toy to play with or chew on to keep himself occupied. It didn't take long for him to realize that we decide when its time to get up, and whining doesn't get him anything. I do however still get up at 7:30 - 8 if he is up when pre-puppy life we would sleep till 9 - 9:30. I think that is a good expected compromise.

Have you tried taking puppie out to potty at that time? the vet told me that for every month old they r, thats how many hours they should go out to potty..if 2 mo..then every 2 hours potty, 3mo=every 3 hours..and so on..maybe you already new that..when my aussies were that age i would put them outside for abt and hour before bdtime..they played and then they slept much better.

debs has a good point, your pup at 6 weeks should need a few potty breaks during night until it gets older.

Thanks again from everyone who replied. I really appreciate the advice. I kept Brody up later last night and did sleep until 4:30. That's not a bad hour to have to get up and go potty. I think the combo of eating a little more, pottying later before bed and more playing before bed makes him sleep longer. Thanks again and wish me luck! This is all new to me.
