I am desperatly seeking some answers. My 3 month old pup maltese/laso apso cross died last night from Parvo. He had a severe case of worms and I have read that this could be a factor. He has been in the care of a Vet since I got him at 8 weeks of age. He has been no where expect my house and our Vet. I am at a loss as to how he contracted parvo. Is it possible he could have come to us with it and it took 6 weeks to attack him??? My Vet's office is exceptionally clean and they are very careful, but the atmosphere he came from was a different story. The poor puppy was riddled with fleas, had a skin condition and had an ear infection. We thought we got it all cleared up and he gets sick and within a few days he died. Has anyone ever heard of a pup carrying the virus then the immune system being so run down that the virus attacks??? Any help would be so gratefully accepted.....

I am very sorry to hear about your puppy. Parvo is a very nasty virus. No matter how clean your vet's office is, the virus can still be there. An adult dog who is fully vaccinated can carry the virus without getting sick. The virus can also live in extreme conditions. It can survive on plastic and in materials. If a surface was not properly cleaned to kill the virus, which is likely if the vet did not realize that it may have been a problem, then yes your pup could have contracted it there. It is unlikely that your pup "carried" he virus for that period of time. Parvo hits hard and quick. If you have any intentions of getting another dog, and the pppy was in your home. toss out any of the puppies toys, and use bleach water diluted 75% bleach 25% water to wash down any surfaces the pup may have come into contact with. I hope this helps you some.

Yes, your puppy could have had the virus before you got him. Im so sorry to here abt your loss its so heart breaking! My sis in law raises hounds and she had a litter show up with parvo..well, there was 5 puppies and she only lost 2 in the bunch..we fed them cottage cheese, and gatorade and pedialite..and the one she lost she took to the vet and had euthenized it was soo horibly sick and had blood coming out both ends...but, the good thing is the other 4 came out of it and are big healthy dogs now 4 yrs later..anyway, we found out that the neighbors dog had it and my sisinlaws family dog (older) went down their and must have exposed pups ... anyway, im so sorry for you pup!!make sure you bleach anywhere that your dog was its the only way to kill the virus it drains into the ground and stays for years. we had to use 20 gallons of bleach to do sis's whole dog kennel and where the pups had been..is time comsumming but so worth it not to get others sick!

Hi, sorry to hear about the loss of your puppy.

Yes, when a pup's immunity is down they get sick, only they really don't carry the virus - their immune systems are often not strong enough to fight off the virus. If exposed it usually attacks puppies fairly quickly, and some pups have a stronger immunity therefore may not be effected right away. If your pup was recently vaccinated, sometimes an adverse reaction to the vaccine can actually give them the virus since when they are given the shot they are actually given the virus -- this has happened a lot more than people realize. Too many vets give shots when the dogs are not 100% healthy --- ONLY when a dog is 100% healthy should it ever get a vaccine!

A person or dog can track in the virus on their shoes, say if they were out walking on the road, at a park or in the woods and happened to step on contaminated feces - or step where feces was. It can be carried on the shoes/feet and even the hair of other dogs.

I doubt the puppy had it at the breeders and then 6 weeks later suddenly came down with the virus, if the pup had it at the breeders usually its only a matter of days before it starts to run them down. This is one reason to select a breeder carefully, with the other problems your pup had, it doesn't sound like the breeder is very responsible and careful. Many vets will recommend waiting 6 months to a year or more before getting another pup. Everything must be bleached.

Hmm, maybe I should bleach my carpet, its not looking so good. Anythings better than what I have now. Teenage boys running rampant thru it.
dgen; I'm sorry about your puppy. It does sound strange that it took six weeks to show up. I always heard it takes about 11 days.
