Hello!

We brought Max to a soccer game the other day and of course he started jumping on everyone that approached him. One guy on my husbands team immediately grabbed his paws and held them. Max didn't jump on him again. He went on to tell us that he had owned a couple labs that had always jumped as puppies. His method was to simply grab on to the paws and squeeze slightly, not enough to make them whine but enoght to show them that jumping is uncomfortable. Since last Wednesday we started doing this with Max. Well, he hasn't COMPLETELY stopped jumping, but the occurences have lessened. So I thought I'd pass it along. Jamiya, I wasn't sure if your puppy was still doing this or not, but I hope it helps if she/he is.

I got a video from Leerburg Kennels and he says to pinch their toes hard enough to make them yelp. I have yet to figure out how to do it correctly. The puppy on his video had been through that training and it was amazing - he still got excited and jumped all AROUND Leerburg, but he never touched him once. Pretty cool.

I have tried holding on to her paws (which makes her bite my hands) and my husband even walks her around the room stretched up on her hind legs, but this seems to do no good.

I'll give it another try, though!

Hi newlabowner,

I tried this with Witt, and he actually liked it,he would stand there with me forever and a year I am sure!, but I know that it worked for a friend of mine with her pup who is also a lab like yours. Like I said before, it all depends on the dog, you gotta find the thing that works for them. I personally would not pinch their feet until they yelped as Jimaya mentioned, this seems to me that it could cause issues with you touching their feet later on. I also think it is un-neccessary and I am betting that the guy at the soccer game didn't need to do that. I was told to simply hold their feet firmly until they found it uncomfortable, hold them for a bit longer and then release. I am glad you found the thing that works for your pup, Yay! for all the hard earned accomplishments along the way to a happy healthy dog with manners.

Hehe, I tried again but it's really hard because she chews on my hands. So I try holding her paws further apart and she still can reach. Arrrgh!

Nope, hasnt' worked for me either. Rudy just chews my hands as well. Tried hold them further apart...he still chewed my hands.

He doesn't do this as much to my husband...and he seems to be good around other people so far.

It's just me...he likes jumping and biting me. Has put holes in several t-shirts and blue jeans. I'm hoping when he starts obedience school this bad habit will subside...or he'll outgrow it.

If he were doing this to strangers, I'd be more upset, but it just seems to be me.....

Jodi, don't take this wrong...but if he is only doing it to you...then it should change after taking some classes, because then you will have learned how to assert yourself to him. It sounds like he doesn't see you as being above him in ranking. The classes will be fun and educational, hang in there.

My friend simply shoved his lab the first time she jumped on him, and he did it so hard she did a somersault. She only jumped that one time, but it didn't seriosly injure her or anything, and she was the sweetest dog i know! (except mine!)
