HELP! My six month old Pug eats her poop all the time. If it's outside, she eats it- soemtimes waits til the next day and we catch her chewing on it like a bone! GROSS! We are still potty training using puppy pads - if we don't get to her quick enough after she goes potty, she'll eat it! Why? Can I do anything?

This is pretty common puppy behavior that most seem to eventually grow out of. There are a few products you can try such as Deter(pill) or Forbid (powder to sprinkle over food) that are supposed to make the poop taste less appealing...I've never used either of these products so Im not sure how effective they are. Prozyme is another product...its supposed to help dogs digest their food better - leaving less undigested material in the poop and thus making it less appealing.

Don't worry. Chances are that your pup will grow out of it. My Husky did it when she was a puppy and grew out of it so I know what you are feeling! She used to bring it in the house and run around with it! Yuck! Anyways, the stuff that Nern said to use is supposed to work so it is worth a shot. I was reading in one of my dog books that you can sprinkle some MSG(monosodium glutamate) or meat tenderizer onto his dogfood. Good luck!

Hi there, Faeces eating is known as ( Coprophagia)
and is quite normal for dogs to eat there own and other animals faeces. There is a few things you can try..

1. Feed the dog several times aday of a high fibre diet this reduces the sensation of hunger.

I have added a link which you may find of some use ...
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/pets/study.htm

keep us posted of the progress

mike
2. Train your dog to go potty on command and reward fro doing so remove the faeces straight after.

3. The more exiting you make your dogs life the less likely he will eat faeces.plenty of exercise and playing will help reduce the sensation in wanting to eat faeces.

4. You can reduce the taste of the faeces adding iron tablets to his food the kind you would give to a pregnant woman, or sulphar containing amino acids may be added to make the faeces taste less pleasant.

5. Remote punishment for witnessed faeces eating can be helpful throw a light object taht will not hurt the dog but this form of punishment has to made to look like it came from the faeces and not you...

number 5 i dont like but different owners have differnt views

Hey ther Carolina Cutie! Woo-Wee!! LOL!

I STILL have your same problem w/ my Am.Bull. In the early stages of his puppyhood he would'nt even think about eating his poop, untill his curiosty started setteling in. My Bulls a wonderer. I'd say around 4-5 months, he would watch me, & have this/that (you know) curiosty look on his face like "why do you (me) always pick up my poop & congradulate me for taking the dump, and quickly walk off w/ it, trying not to let me know where your putting it." I think by me doing this everyday his curiosity fianlly got the best of "us" & he started eating his doo-doo! Now, he eats his bro's dump (a Shar Pei). I think he thinks that i'm always giving our Pei something better than he's getting durring feeding time, or feeding them both anything in general. So, after my Pei, does his do's, my Am.Bull runs after my Pei & looks for his dump trying to see/sniff what was in his food that was different from his... are you following me so far.? Anyhow, till this day, he's practically almost all grown up, and he still eats my Pei's ca-cah. It's really nasty... But, i think what works best out of all that i've tried to stop him from his bad-habit, is that stuff that everyone else mentioned. I forgot exactly what product i tired, but it's in a pill (like a vitamin) form. Since my AmBull eats my Pei's doo=doo, i feed this stuff to my Pei. So, when my Bully finds the urge to want to eat shizz, he get's a mouthfull of REAL nastiness! At least to his disliking. You would think what could be worse than a mouthfull of ca-cah. This stuff that i've tried is mostly made of plant extracts. So i'm guessing it tastes biter. Whatever it is, it works, & should be completly safe. Just give it in the correct amounts according to weight. It's not expensive too. It's worth every penny, & i'm sure you'll agree. the reason why my Bully still eats poop, is because he only does this now when he's borred. And we always run out of it. Well, we've only gone through one box of like 24pcs. GOOD LUCK w/ your yuck mouth. LOL!
