Hey all. What kind of heartworm preventive do you use?

My previous dogs used Heartguard. My new vet recommended Sentinel, and Frontline for fleas, etc. They also recommend that 6-month shot once the dog is old enough for it.

I know they all guard against a different range of things in addition to heartworms - anyone have an opinion about what product is best?

I use Sentinel only and never have fleas. Sentinel makes a flea sterile and they can't reproduce. I don't feel comfortable with the 6 month shot because my Toy Poodle is so small. My Vet does not recommend it because if they happen to have a reaction to it they are as good as gone. It is a slow release medicine and he said that once it is in their system you can't get it out. It just keep dosing them. He lost one to this and doesn't use it anymore. I feel more comfortable with the monthly pills.

Does Sentinel kill ticks? I think the reason for the Frontline was ticks, not fleas, now that I think of it. We do get a lot of ticks around here.

Jamiya - heartgaurd protects against the heartworm and other worms.

Sentinial protects against heartworm and fleas. You might be over medicating your dog by both using frontline (which is both flea and ticks) and sentinal which is also a flea preventative

It sounds like you should be using heartguard and frontline.

I use sentinal since it is a flea/heartworm combo. We do have ticks but they are seasonal and I use a Preventic collar during the season. My vet recommended this since he says he doesnt like the dogs to be on too many things that can make them sick.

I use the six month shot, Proheart. I have hard time remembering to give it to them every month. I live in Wyoming now and when I took the dogs in for their shot back in April, my vet told me that heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos and since they die during the winter, I only need to give them the shot once a year. They can't get heartworms in the winter when it is cold. My dogs have done very well with the shot, they have been on it for a year and a half now.

My dogs are all on both Frontline AND Sentinel. We live in the deep South, so all kinds of crawling creatures are around pretty much all year round. But to answer your question:

1) Sentinel protects against not only heartworms, but also against almost all of the gastrointestinal worms (i.e. roundworms, hookworms, etc - with the exception of tapeworms). It also breaks the cycle in flea reproduction (basically it kills the larvae). But it does not kill adult fleas, and it has no effect on ticks. This is why I also use
2) Frontline - it repells and kills both fleas and ticks (mature ones).

My vet has always congratulated us for keeping our babies pest free. So this system works.
The medication might seem to be expensive, but if you break the cost down, you will only come up with around $ 20.00 per dog per month (pretty much the cost of a couple of six packs). I believe it's more than worth it, to keep your baby healthy and happy.

Oh, and I forgot to add - I will not give my babies the six months shot. I don't trust it, and even if it did work, what about the other parasites??!!

Although it is expensive, it's not the cost I am worried about. I just want to make sure she is on the correct medication. This vet's office was recommended to me by several people, but I have not decided yet if I am pleased with them. I may shop around a little more...
