hi, I have an old dog (14 yrs), that has recently developed a very bad cough. He has a cough that is extremely raspy. He coughs about six times, which is then followed immediately by a gagging/reching type of motion, as if he is trying to dislodge something in his throat(sometimes resulting in vomitimg bile).
This occurs about twice an hour.
(The reason I haven't taken him to a vet is the fact that I am a student and I don't have any money)
thanx for any assistance, dasher.

Could be several things, and your dog needs to be seen by a vet. It could be bordatella (kennel cough), he could have some kind of obstruction, or even a partially collapsed trachea, among other things. Please get him to a vet. I hope you can find a way to financially handle it- maybe get on a payment plan?

Because of the dogs age it could be congestive heart failure which is fluid building up in the chest area. It can cause a cough and happens a lot in older dogs. It also could be keenel cough or several other things like jeminn said. Please try to find a way to bring him to the Vet. He will thank you for it.

Check with the Humane Society of the United States to see if they have a low cost vet clinic in your area. Also SPCA's sometimes have low cost services for people like students. Check around your area.

This is such a great forum. Everyone cares. All the above is what I was going to tell you. My mother has a 13 yr old poodle/bishon that coughs etc. You have to get your dog to the vet. Congestive heart just gets worse & is uncomfortable for the dog. Find out about giving a dog COQ10. We give Kozy 10mg for enlarged congestive heart. It's safe. I take it. My father had that condition & he lived longer than expected. Good luck.
