I am having a ton of trouble leash training my 3 1/2 month old lab. This guy wants to go anywhere but where he is supposed to be going. Does anyone have any advice? IP: Logged |

Just keep being consistent with him. He is very young and labs are very energetic (and goofy) dogs. When we take our 4 month old mix to the park, we pretty much let her run around and sniff things at her own pace (on a retractable leash). When we walk in the neighborhood, I use it as more of a learning experience and try to get her to walk with me. All the "professional" advice ranges from stopping when the dog pulls until they come over to you to see why you're not moving and then start walking...repeat a thousand times. Or change directions before they hit the end of the leash so they have to catch up to you. Repeat as necessary. If they refuse to walk, then coax them to come with you. Use treats to get them to walk by your side. There are a ton of things to try. My trainer actually said to not worry about it too much when they are so young. They want to explore, they don't have a huge attention span, etc. Others say never let a puppy start pulling or it will be harder to break later. So, be comforted that your puppy is normal. Get into a puppy class, contact a trainer, or read up on leash training in books or on the internet. Good luck with your puppy!

You may have to experiment with different types of collars- what are you using now? How are you training him to walk on a leash? Are you using treats to encourage your pup to follow you? The first step in training your dog to walk on a leash is to train him to WANT to walk with you, and that it means fun, praise and rewards for following you while he is dragging his leash or long rope along your side. Encourage him with lots of praise and patting your legs to get him to stick with you, rewarding with treats. Keep him entertained and make it enjoyable- he is only a pup. Give him praise when he sits- if he is jumping up all over you, tell him to sit and wait until he is sitting before you give him your praise and rewards. Dogs catch on to this pretty quick- yours isn't too young to get the idea as long as you are not expecting too much from him just yet. IP: Logged |
