I just got a 5 month oldf male puupy from the rescue. We've got everything! I need to continue his housetraining but I want to do it right. He's in a crate while I'm away at work and at night when it's sleep time. I take him outside first thing in the morning, as soon as I come home, before bedtime, and whenever else it looks like he has to go. What else can I do? He went poop all over his crate yesterday but peed outside in the morning and when I took him after coming home.(I'm a teacher at a school 30 minutes from home so I'm gone from 645-330 M-F)

I work from 8am-3pm and my husband works 8am-5pm. What I do is get up very early - about 2 hours before I have to leave for work (5:30am). I let Nala out (she is about 4 months old) and feed her and play with her. She comes in with me to the bathroom when I take my shower (she hates that). I leave for work at about 7:30am, and when my husband leaves 10 mintues after that he puts her in her crate.

He goes home for lunch and lets her out, feeds her, lets her out again, and then back in the crate. I leave work and pick up the kids, and when we get home I let her out.

She gets fed dinner at about 5pm. I watch her at all times when I am home and if she hovers around the back door I let her out. If she is sniffing around a lot I ask her if she wants to go out and I let her out. If she takes a nap, the second she stands up, I let her out. I let her out a LOT.

I always go with her outside. I ask her "Do you have to go potty?" and if she pees or poops I praise her "GOOD potty! Good potty!" right when she is going. We have had her for about 3 weeks. Now when we take her somewhere, I can ask her if she has to go and if she does she will usually squat and go right there - pretty handy.

The first week or two, I got up with her in the middle of the night to let her out. It was very low key. I tried to not talk to her or even look directly at her, as few lights as possible, etc. Then she went right back in her crate.

Dogs usually don't pee or poop in their crates. Is yours small enough? There should be just enough room for the dog to turn around and lie down. Any bigger and they will use one end for a potty. If it is a wire crate, you can get a divider to make it smaller.

Make sure anything the dog potties on in the house is cleaned up with an enzymatic cleaner so they can't smell the urine anymore, or they will keep using that spot.

Your dog needs to have time to poop after eating, which is why you will need to get up early to feed him and let him have some play time and hopefully poop before you put him back in the crate for the day. Walking sometimes speeds the process up, so if you feed him and wait about 15-30 minutes and then take him for a walk, he should produce.

Oh, and my husband stays up later than I do at night (since I have to get up at 5:30am with the puppy) so he usually brings her to bed (her crate) around midnight, after taking her out one last time.

I hope this helps!

hi your puppy should be let out to do its business when it first wakes, after every meal and every play time even in between, when you puppy goes out and does what he should outside praise him and you can give him a treat if you like he soon comes accustomed to being praised and rewarded for something good, if your puppy has an accident indoors where he shouldnt be doin it and you catch him in the act you could use a water spray bottle and gentle spray him but this must be seen coming from the floor not you and he will soon learn that this is wrong and tell him bad puppy and put him straight outdoors after a couple of weeks you shouldnt need the crate i dont believe in them myself i have never used one and i breed dogs but each owner is different good luck with your new dog and keep us pposted of his progress

IMO-- I wouldn't use bad dog commands or spray bottles.. it will jsut teach the puppy to hide to use the bathroom.. I find just cleaning it with somethign that will take the scent away when the puppy does not see you doing it (Giving it the idea that yeah I made that mess and it is okay, someone will just clean it) The pup won't smell wher eit eliminated and forget about it.. Just clean it with no comments to the dog or anything, and do this when the pup cannot see you. Keep routine to go out to the bathroom and the pup will catch on after a while that potty area is outside..

A couple of weeks? They say to not expect a dog to be totally reliable indoors for at least 6 months and most likely a year.

My aussie x was fully housetrained by 4 months of age. I did'nt use a crate but kept her closed off in the kitchen during the night and while I was not home. I never punished her for any accidents she had in the house but I did make a loud noise if I caught her in the act and then rushed her outside. I took her outside frequently and always stayed outside with her until she went and then praised her for going. I kept my eye on her *at all times* while she had free roam of the house so that I could recognize any signs that she might have to go and get her outside in time. I had my neighbor come half way through the day to let her outside while I was at work. She caught on very quickly. Im sure it really depends on the individual dog...some seem to catch on more quickly than others regardless of the training methods used.
Most dogs with not go in the area they sleep (a crate for example) if your dog pooped in the crate its quite possible that he just could not hold it....for this type of situation I would recommed putting him on a strict feeding schedule....feeding him at specific times so that he can digest his food and has ample time (before being crated) to poop outside. Also, if possible I would have a neighbor, friend or family member come over to let him out during the middle of the day while your at work....this should help prevent future accidents from occuring inside the crate. Good luck.
