Hello everyone,
I'm in need of some help here. My wife and I got a 6 week old terrier mix puppy about 3 weeks ago. At night we keep her in the laundry room with a baby gate that prevents her from getting around the rest of the house because she is not fully potty trained yet. The first week we had her she whined at night but we never responded hoping she would learn. So the second week we had her she didn't whine at night, I thought the problems were over. But the third week she has started whining at night again. I'm at wits end, I don't know what to do. She will whine for about 30 minutes, then I guess she'll fall asleep for awhile, then whine again at about 2 AM, then 4 AM, then we finally get up at 6. It drives my wife and I crazy because it wakes us up. What can we do?

Thanks for your help.

I dont know how to help out on this situation. But you should know that this pup is to young to be taken away from its mother. You say she is 6 weeks and you have had her for 3 weeks...which makes her 3 weeks old when you got her. She was taken away way too soon from her mother. The normal time to separate baby from mother is about 8-10 weeks old. I dont know what to tell you. Did you get her from a breeder? If so you should call and see what they say. Also it would be a good idea to get ahold of a vet. I know you dont want to give in to the new pup, but just take the age into consideration also. Hope everything works out.

I meant that she was 6 weeks old when we got her, so she's now 9 weeks old.

You may want to consider crate training her and putting the crate in the bedroom with you at night. This way she won't feel alone. Crate training can work wonders and will help in the potty training.

Puppies that young cannot go all night with out needing a potty break. We have a 13 week old lab and for the first month my husband slept in the same room as his crate and took him outside on midnight potty breaks. It's hard when you work, but well worth it for the pup.

Pups that young need to be let out at least once in the night because they are too young to "hold it". Crate training is hard in the begining(especially the first couple of weeks!) but well worth it in the end. I crate both my dogs and they love their crates. They think of them as their quiet place to lay down and chew bones and even play in together! Think about keeping the crate with you in the bedroom at night..he will like being close to you but remember it is hard at first but stick with it. It will get alot better. He is just a baby now.
