I've looked via "search" and I've not seen a similar topic, but am wondering how you hooked up with your pet/s.

I have Samson the Rottie/Mastif mix dog because:

1) Our landlady won't let us get a cat

2) Our landlady used to belong to our old beloved Doggie, Short Rib, and by coincidence, we ended up renting her house

3) Samson was a humane society dog that my husband fell in love with. He had also taken the kids to see this dog. They fell for him too.

4) and... on the day of my five year old son's birthday, after the party, my husband said "Oh, let's show Shade the dog in the pound!" We also had the neighbor girl with us, giving her a ride home... so, I'm all saying "yes, he is a pretty dog..." and my husband says "GUESS WHAT!? We can take him home today if we want!!! They've checked our refrences and we're good to go!"

Of course, all the kids were hopping up and down with joy! I wasn't employeed at the time, and quite frankly wasn't ready for a new dog.

But, I ended up being the person that Sammy bonded with, since I was the person left at home with him.

How'd you find your pet? What pets do you have? Tell it here!

P.S. Other pets I have = fish, and piranha, and I'd give anything to have a kitty!

Dooley is my 2.5 year old Aussie X, I was on a waiting list with a breeder for an Australian Cattle Dog when at a horse show I saw Dooley, the woman had a huge litter of puppies in the back of her truck. They all looked like yellow labs except Dooley, he was blue merle from head to toe. His mom is a pb black and white Aussie and his dad is a pb yellow lab. I just couldn't resist his cuteness and I had already done so much research on herding type dogs that I knew he would fit right into the family, so $35 and a handshake and he was mine.
Dooley was supposed to be my dog, and I have done all the training with him. He loves me dearly and is very loyal to me, but it is my husband he bonded with the most, he thinks he is GOD. I still wanted a dog all my own, not one I had to share ( cause I'm a brat that way), so when he was almost two years old, I started looking again. I wanted a Catahoula, the problem is that most breeders are located in the southern states. I started looking on the rescue site and Petfinder, I came across a puppy in California that was half Catahoula and he was beautiful. I talked to the woman who had rescued him, his mom and siblings from the pound. After much e-mailing and many phone conversations I had learned enough about his personality to think he was the pup for me, we tried to put together transport, but nobody wanted to drive through the MT.s in February. I didn't think I was going to get him and it broke my heart. My husband as a Valentines gift said he would drive me to California to get him and we did. It was a great adventure filled with anticipation and never has a puppy felt so good in my arms as Witt did in the parking lot of a hotel in California. He is everything I hoped he would be, he has turned out to be my heart and soul dog, he prefers me to everyone (which the brat in me absolutely secretly loves!), and he gets along great with Dooley. Twice I have wanted to get a pb dog...and twice I have ended up getting a rescue, I guess thats just the way it was meant to be.

Maisey your so cute!

We got Max at the Humane Society. My husband and I were disagreeing whether we should get an older dog or a very small puppy. We had found Luna who was a German Short Haired Pointer Mix, 8 months and adorable. However my husband wasn't connecting well with her he said. He asked if we could sleep on it and talk in the morning. So we did and we both decided we wanted to spend some more time with her. I called the Humane Society and they assured me she was still there. But when I got there 20 minutes later and walk down the long corridor she wasn't there. I was very disappointed but I knew to expect this because dogs under 1 yr go fast. Well I thought, I'll run down the other hallway and see what I can find. I turned the corner and there is sweet little Max, 8 weeks old sitting in this large kennel by himself (his siblings had been adopted out in the last few hours). And he just melted my little heart. So I called my husband quick took Max into a little room and snuggled up with him. Of course my husband didn't think for a second and said let's take him! But I'm with Maisey I'm secretly happy that he is my dog =).

I'm going to attach a picture because I want you guys to see the little face that melted me! He is Labr Retriever Mix.. they said his mom was a Shar-Pei but he just has a few crinkles on his forehead and around his mouth.
Max Then:

Great stories, and pics!!
I got my husky while I was in college in Nebraska- I answered an add in the paper, and when I went to the place to pick her up, to my horror, I found it to be a puppy mill. It was a heartwrenching experience- had never seen it firsthand and it made me sick. I found my little husky pup, the last of the litter in a wire cage and although I could not rescue the hundreds of dogs and puppies this farm had on sight, I snatched my husky pup up in my arms, bought her for $90, and then reported the mill to Animal control (it was in a rural area in Nebraska)- they have since been shut down. So, that is my husky story- she is now 16 years old and still going pretty strong. She loved to sled when she was in her youth- and has been really fun breed to have. During that time, I was in college and I answered an add to work part-time at a dog and horse training/boarding kennel, and my husband and I ended up moving on the premises, working there and living there for several years. We raised Labs, and German Shepherds. I learned most of what I know today about dogs from working with the hundreds of dogs we trained there for for hunting and field trial work (sporting breeds) and we also did some protection training there in conjunction with the police departement. It was an interesting expereince. We did basic obedience training as well, and boarding for up to 175 dogs and cats. Their daughter was the horse trainer, and she is now on the Olympic team for Dressage. We aquired our chocholate lab there, Ty and he was our hunting pal for my husband. Then we moved for job reasons-but still go back regularly and help them out when they travel or during holidays. It is a busy place- and they are like family to us. After we moved to Kansas City, we had a stray cat adopt us- he was a fat black cat, so we named him fattycat. He is now 8 or 9, we are not sure. Then, a few years later, AND 3 children later came another cat, Little Bo from Santa (actually rescued from a dumpster) and another cat, Butterscotch- part of a litter from the kennel where I worked that was a stray who ended up pregnant on their doorstep. We moved again to Colorado this past year, again for job reasons and we ALWAYS had wanted to live in the mountains. We landed in a very dog friendly, rural mountain community, so I started thinking about another dog- did lots of resesarch and wanted a herding type breed for agility training, hiking and biking, and a dog that would be a great family dog with a protective nature. I found a little black tri Austrailian Shepherd in Boulder, and that was it- she was the one. My ten year old daughter also saved money for two years to buy a bearded dragon- she is a reptile lover, so we added that to the family this summer as well and his name is Max. Along with a few fish- we have a houseful, but we love it this way. When my Husky is gone, I will be getting another dog, probably from the shelter.

I have 3 dogs and a fish.Rikki is a scottish terrier,he was abandoned and I inherited him.His family moved out of state and asked me to watch him til they could come get him, that was two years ago, my new husband doesn't like dogs but he didn't have the heart to abandoned him too.
The fish , well he's a Beta , i named him blue,I've tried to have fish befor but I could never keep them alive very long, then I saw a beta in a jar with a plant growing out of it.It was so pretty, I decided to try it, Blue is 1 1/2 years old.
Befor my husband left for Iraq he bought me two beautiful kittens from a shelter, to keep me company.Sadly they were exposed to FIP while being re checked at the vet.Roz died and FIFI had to be euthanised.I was so heartbroken I couldn't adopt another Kitten.I began scanning the pet section of the want ads,my way of dealing with my grief, when I saw an ad for a small breed dog whose elderly owner had passed away.I figured it couldn't hurt to at least see her so i did and of course we bonded immediately her name is Lucy and she's quite old a pekinese, pomeranian mix. Then there's Gizmo the newest addition to our family.I love to visit the shelters and pet shops and on this particular day I was killing time waiting for an appointment.I stopped at petland, saw the cutest little shizu puppy, but he wasn't playing around like the other puppies.I stared at him til he returned my look and his big eyes just pleaded take me home.I've never paid so much for a dog in my life, nor have I ever owned a pedigree dog with papers, it just seemed right. I couldn't help myself.

Well this post was one I couldnt resist responding to. I have 3 dogs, 2 chinchillas, 3 bearded dragons, a Sri Lanken Ornamental Tarantula, and too many fish to count. most of my animals are rescues. Oreo is my 15 year old shelti-lab mix. She was gotten from the pound as a puppy by my fiance so she is definitely a daddy's girl. Then there is Abby my 2 1/2 years old rottweiler. Her story is a sad one but all too often heard. I rescued Abby from the pound. She was there for exactly one month to the day that I brought her home. I found out after I adopted her, her time was running out. How I ended up with Abby is a strange story. I was just sitting on the couch one day watching tv when I got this really strong inclination to go down to our local shelter. I was not even thinking about getting a second dog. But I couldnt get rid of this feeling I had so I got in my car and went down to the shelter. I headed towards the dogs. Now I have to tell you I have loved and researched rottweilers since I was 12 years old. I have always loved them but figured my first rottweiler I would get from a breeder. I walked down the line of kennels. I stopped at a male rottweiler but saw on his pen he was on hold he found a home. I continued walking I stopped in front of a skinny, dirty pathetic excuse of a rottweiler. Her fur was so dull, she was so thin, and she looked up at me like keep walking everyone else has. I went and spoked to a couple workers there who both said she was the sweetest baby. I asked for them to get her out. We went into a room. I tried to play with her but she was much more interested in the shelter worker that was in with me. I managed to play with her for a little and got the infamous rotty butt sit. I left and decided to go home and think about it. I went home but got Oreo right away instead. Took Oreo to the shelter and minus Oreo getting sick of Abby sniffing her butt they got along great. So I came back home once again but thought my fiance would never go for another dog. He loved rottweilers too but I knew he would be hesitant about getting our first from a shelter. He came home and tried to tell me no after some water works and fighting I got my way. We went back that night, Rob fell in love, we filled out the paper work, and they called the next day to tell me I could bring her home. When we got her home we realized more the state she was in. She was severely abused by a male as even my fiance raising his arms to stretch would make her cower and submissively urinate. She also had separation anxiety but she was my baby. After months of working with her she improved tremendously. But she is and always will be a mommy's girl. Her nickname is Bubby a combination of baby and buddy. Cuz that is what she is my baby and my best friend. I believe Abby called out to me from a shelter and I answered that call. SHe is my soul mate I dont think I could ever have a connection like this with any other dog.
Then there is Daisy my 3 1/2 year old rottweiler. After we got Abby I started rescuing and fostering for a while. After we had Abby for about 6 months I thought she needed a buddy to pal around with when we werent home to thelp her with her separation anxiety. All the fosters taht I had just didnt seem to be the ones. They were good for other homes and other people who wanted to love them. Then I got a post on one of my rottweiler forums. This lady that runs a great dane rescue posted a plea for help about a 3 year old rotty she had that was being attacked by her danes on numerous occasions and was just so stressed out she couldnt watch in anymore. Something tugged at my heart strings. i called her that night and we talked for 3 hours. Daisy had some issues that because of this most people would say to either put her down or she could never be adopted out. I picked up Daisy the next weekend. Daisy resource guards meaning she guards her food and toys. Which we dont have children so it is something we can work with. We just dont leave toys out and food bowls go up after they are done eating. But other than that she is the biggest sweetheart. She is the one that will lick you to death if you come over to visit. She is a total daddy's girl.
Which works for us cuz there is a saying that is sooo soo true if ya dont want a dog that follows you around everywhere dont get a rottweiler. And it is the absolute truth. I cant leave a room without having a 90 and a 115 pound rotties following me where ever I go. Abby especially is always in whatever room I am in the farthest she will go is the hallway right outside the doorway. Abby also learned on her own how to open doors so shutting the door doesnt even keep her out. But they are my babies Abby especially who is a 90 pound lap dog. Loves to climb up on the sofa or bed with me and lay on me and drift off to sleep. For my dogs know now that they are safe. No more beatings, no more attackes from other dogs, no more pain. They can now be what they were meant to do love and be loved. and spoiled, spoiled, spoiled!

Rottymommy, how much are tickets to your zoo?

Armywife, I'm a new comer to dog ownership. This larger bread you're getting is a puppie? Hopefully the grown teeny dogs will be the alpha dogs by virtue of their maturity. I'd be nervous too.

OMG ROTTY-- I HATE YOU!! lol.. j/k! Everyone in the place thinks I am a sap head.. I had tears coming down my face reading about Abby, and just my luck my fiancee has friends over.. Grr!! lol.

As far as my mutts go..lol. Ever since I was five we have had Pitbull's in and out of our family and I'e always loved them. Anyhow, our first Pitbull my father brought home, I was five, seh was my girl, Tootsie. Anyhow, she was put down at twelve years old and here it is three years later, the people that I got her from out of the blue got my email address somehow. (think my website) They wrote to me and said they needed to talk to me desperately. Their Boston Terrier and APBT had three pups, one had died, one their daughter was taking but one was homeless and ten weeks old and they needed him a home. So after crying and whining about NEEDING a second dog, we went and got Jekkyl. The ladies husband had a stroke and is epileptic (sp?) and they could not handle so many dogs. So I took him instead of him going to a shelter. He showed fear of people because he had never been around anyone really, but now he is a mjor pain when people come here. But he is a sweetheart.. definately a momma's boy..

Then there is Saige. She is a pb APBT. Saige was a different story. My lab/shepherd mix had passed away at six months old due to liver failure (He was sixteen pounds) he had serious birth defects. I was heart broken and swore I would never get another dog. For some reason I started lookign into Pitbull's and calling just to see what people said. Well we found a family four hours (one way) driving distance. I decided I wasn't stopping til I got her. They called and said the pups were ready and we had pick of the litter. When we got there, the story was different. They were tiny little things. They told me all of the truth when we got there. They were really four weeks old, she had gotten rid of two already. Separated from their mother all the time, paperless. It was a wreck.. on top of that their living area was discusting, messy looked like a junk yard. There must have been fifty garbage bags piled by their mailbox and junk strewed all through out their home and lawn. Two females (mother and seven month old) crated together, pups in one crate and vicious male dog in another. The mother came out, the father tried to tear the crate to pieces and the other female peed on the floor when told to go in the kitchen, very submissive. Later I found out there was another male that hides in the bedroom under the bed in fear of people or other dogs, he is scared of cats, spiders anythign that moves (some Pitbull!) These dogs were obviously beaten badly. I took one anyhow because I knew about pups at that age from breeding before. I brought her home and we deal with many issues but knowing now what kind of people they were I am happy we brought her home. I reported them to the state ACO. On the cover of the paper were those two going out the door in cuffs, with a big article about finding cocaine, marijuana, three dead pups (two were about five weeks, one was about nine weeks) beaten to death in a paper bag in an abandoned van behind their house. These pups were all females and were pups from Saige's litter. One of which I saw before her, but changed my mind once I found her huddled shivering in her crate all alone, calm and being picked on by other pups. They found boards with blood stains, one dog was so vicious it was put down, the dog that hid was so mentally stressed and emaciated they put it down. The mother and other female are placed in homes now. It made me sick to my stomach knowing it could have been Saige that was dead in a paper bag and I know I contributed to a BYB but I got my baby out of there. Now we are just dealing with her separation anxiety but understand why she has it, and dealign with her beign grouchy at times, but not aggressive. She is a sweetheart. We are fighting demodex as well but she is being spayed and I am passing on the word of her history to try to influence people to watch for signs and REPORT them and hopefully even just one dog, save it.. Saige is a big baby now, she lays by the bed and cries to mama to let her up but daddy got real strict and won't let her up.. she sneaks up and scurries to me to lift the covers, she climbs under and falls asleep when daddy is not looking. But he always finds her because she snores too loud. Jekkyl and Saige are four months old now and doing excellent. They suffer from a very common disease called SRPS (Spoiled Rotten Puppy Syndrome) Sure many of you have heard of it.. very common!! LOL.. I will get pics of the critters as soon as I get them onto photo island. Also we have Wylie who was a Valentine's Day present to my fiancee because he wanted a Maine coon to rais from kittenhood.. he is part dog I think. Very lazy and strange eight month old cat. And Kenzie who is formerly known as Molly. She was taken from a neighbor who beat her, locked her in the closet for days, changed her litter once a month and never fed her anything but tuna fish and dry cat food with maggots and beatles in it. She was petfrified of people and outdoors. Her hair was so matted that it looked like osmeone gave her dreadlocks. Skinny as it got. She was being treated for worms by the vet every other week because she had them so bad, it took two months of patiently working out her matts, she no longer uses a litter box because she goes outside, she is over affectionate and is getting a belly on her. She is healthy and happy, we even changed her name because she started a whole new life and her old name was just a reminder of her old life. She is doing great! That is the story of my critters.. we are looking into getting sugar gliders and I HAVE to get turtles and lizards, but not til the pups are completely trained and understand what limits are.. lol.

Angie, Saige, Jekkyl, Wylie and Kenzie...

I have 2 dogs Boss and Demi. I never have to go looking for animals, they always come to me. I got Boss when I was working one night and the security guard brought this 6 month old puppy in. He had been wandering around a busy street and some kids were chasing him trying to corner him. I said I would bring him home for the night so we could look for the owners. We never found the owners, and he is still here 2 1/2 years later. I decided he needed a friend since the cats didn't really like playing with him. One day I went to petsmart and they had dogs there for adoption by a rescue group. I saw this dog and I just wanted her. Demi came home the next day. They named her Demi, and she was already 9 months old. It's an unfortunate name b/c it sounds like I am calling her Dummy when I call her. She wont answer to Demi pronounced like Demi Moore. I think it's too late to change her name though!

Maisey: I want to commend you for looking at a rescue group when you decided you wanted a catahoula. So many people buy from breeders when there are purebreds out there that no one wants. I still think you dog is all catahoula. He looks just like my mom's dog who we know is purebred catahoula. She rescued him from a less than scrupulous breeder. Her dog, Boo, has a lot of excess skin around his neck and face. I mean a lot. I will try to take a picture of him next time I am there, so you can see how much they look alike.

But Husky, I have millions of photos of Sammy. How shall I choose one? Can you connect to the following links? (you know, I'm sure, that if you right click you can choose "open in new window" and that way can still read here, but also look at the pictures)

Samson's gallery is here:
http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=221931

and I attempted to photo-journal a virtual walk with him one day here, but he isn't in too many of them. It's just leaving our house, our street, the neighborhood, etc. We didn't even see any eagles, bears or porcupines on this walk like we usually do! http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=266374

feel free to use/copy any you or your sister would like.

Shade - your pics are so cute! My husband decided he wanted a dog, he wanted a water dog. I said I refused to buy a purebred. Well After he sat for 3 hours at the humane society waiting to adopt a lab mix, the people in front of him took it. He wanted a water dog so I would call in the paper. My husband said for me to ask how many littlers the female had it was something like 10. How disgusting. Well he found a breeder could be BYB I said No! he said just to look. They had 3 dogs - he fell in love with one of them, so I said okay ( the other 2 were from a different litter. The breeder said he had an overbite and to make sure to get him fixed. We came home with Jake. We cant keep him out ot the water. He is such a sweet heart. his is 6 1/2 years old now. IN 1997 my 15 year old cat died. year later I wanted to get another cat - I went to petco and there was a beautfiul maincoon. I wasnt sure I wanted it so I went to the fosters house. It broke my heart - she must have had 20 cats - 10 dogs, well the poor thing wouldnt come out from under the bed so I said no - a fe months later I stopped at petco again and there was this beautiful orange and white long hair named Midas. The fosters said he was relinquished and was adopted thru her rescue, well Ihad to give him a try. He is the greatest cat! during this time I was trying to convince my husband Jake needed a playmate he said NO. Jake is very needy and he said just put 2 of them together. Not long after we were came home on a summer eve. and down the street what looked like a coyote (we lived in the hills) and then realized it was a dog. My husband tol me to sit down and call the dog over. She jumped into my lap, a pathetic thing - skin and bones, you could tell she had been abused, we put in in the back yard. I took her to the vet, she spent a week there with various ailments and 700$ later she came home. We a said what are we going to do now. my husband said she could stay and we name her Wylie. It turns out people had been trying to catch her for days. And she picked us. It took her aver a year to get settled and be comfortable around us. We have had her for 4 years. Wylie Jake and Midas are the best of friends
