I know a lady who had a dog a (bishon firse) This dog a day after his 11th birthday got hit by a car. This lady was there when it happened she was walking him. She says she cant get over the picture of him under the car and she says she wants to grive first. Then get a dog. She wants a small dog because she has a cat who used to be a wild stray and this cat is coming over to her she owns the cat by the way. So what do people think? Should she get another dog right away or what I think she should can you tell me about some books or anything that can help her out please and thank you! IP: Logged |

I think she is the only one who can decide when the time is right to get a new pet after such a horrible accident. I would just encourage her to keep pictures of her dog, and cherish the memories- she will know when it is the right time to get another dog. I lost one of my cats to a car accident and it was terrible, so I can relate to how she feels. You just never forget the sight of it. It is nice that you care and want to help- I wish her well. Yes, this is a very personal matter. Some people want a new dog right away. Some want to wait. Some want a dog just like their previous dog. Some want a dog that's totally different. My dog died suddenly 2 months ago. Looking at new dogs made me feel better, but I wasn't ready to get one yet. After two months, I was ready. I was planning on getting a Golden, which would have been totally different from my little black terrier. But I ended up with a stray from the shelter and I didn't realize until I got her home how much her face reminds me of my other dog. She is the same size even, but she is just a puppy so she will grow much bigger. It was an adjustment, even after 2 months. I had my husband put a fence around our dog's grave so the new dog couldn't potty on it or even walk on it (and especially not dig!). I think a huge golden dog would have been easier, but I love my new puppy and we are adjusting. Rushing into getting a new dog when you are not over the previous is not a good idea. She will know when she is ready. And perhaps some counseling might even be in order if she is having trouble with the trauma of the accident. There is no shame in that.
