Hi, I was hoping that someone can tell me if colds, fevers, flu's & other similar human-viruses are contagious to dogs. I currently have a cold, fever, or flu or something. I was just wondering if my dogs can get sick too, from me. Does it matter if they have a weak immune-system or something? I'm clueless, PLEASE help... IP: Logged |

There are a lot of diseases than are transmitted to humans from animals, and it can go the other way too. It really depends on what it is, and how it is transmitted. Most of the organisms that cause "colds" in dogs do not infect humans. I guess the answer is that yes you could possibly give a "cold" or the "flu" to your dog and vice versa, but it's not very likely. IP: Logged |

Dogs can get strep infections, I know that! I'm not sure if it makes them sick, but they can carry the bacteria and pass it to humans. I know of a family whose kids kept getting it again after they finished their antibiotics, and they finally cultured the dog and found out he was the culprit!

Well I am happy I stumbled acrossed this threasd.. lol. I am one of those people that says, "My dog's mouth is cleaner than yours!!" to everyone. I will share an ice cream with my dogs, if I am eating something they eat it off my fork and I continue eating it.. I really don't care.. they are my children. I knwo that sounds gross. I have them trained that lollipops are not something you bite.. you lick it.. I mean.. we share everything.. yet I have a hard time to let someone take a drink of something I am drinking without being discusted by it. I KNOW YOU ARE ALL THINKING>> OMG>> THAT IS SOOOO GROSS!! But oh well.. I will keep this all in mind when I am sick.. lol. Angie IP: Logged |

Occasionally my dogs will get a lick in when I am not paying attention, but I don't let them lick my face on purpose. Its hard to want to their saliva on you when you see them licking their butt and eating the cat's and their own vomit. Not to mention the cat poop if they can get to it. I don't want cat poop or vomit in my mouth----yuck! [This message has been edited by fleafly (edited 09-12-2003).] IP: Logged |

My vet says yes, I recently adopted a very healthy puppy that caught a cold from one of the kids and nearly died.He was too small and young to fight off the cold and the mucus was choking him. 10 days of antibiotics and he was good as new.I asked the vet how he could have caught a cold, his answer was while humans don't normally have disease transferred to them by cats and dogs, they are able to contract the illnesses from thier owners.Something I never knew. LOL.. we got no litter box.. plus.. they will sniff vomit but walk away.. (GOOD THING!) They lick their butts on their own time.. Did you know a dog actually has a cleaner mouth than that of a human?? They have bacterial fighting enzymes supposedly.. that fight off bacteria.. Angie ------------------ IP: Logged |

just a note here: sugar is what causes bad bacteria to grow in our mouths, so feeding a dog ice cream, lollys, etc. will result in tooth decay and bad germs. Just so ya know. That said: I'm very guilty of feeding my pets sugar. ;-) IP: Logged |

Hi mrpvslilmrs, Thanks for the info... Actually what kind of dog of yours caught the cold, and how old?? Also, what kind of antibiotics? What other kinds of symptoms were there, besides him choking on mucus? Thanks Again. IP: Logged |
