Hello again. My puppy does not like to go for walks. She loves to tear around the backyard (and eat the bushes) but she runs away when she sees the leash. I make her go anyway (by carrying her outside and then putting the leash on) and then she will come with me. She leaps around on the leash like most puppies do, but I have to keep coaxing her to come along with much hand-clapping and cheerful words. She doesn't even notice treats in my hand when I have tried that approach. The moment we turn for home, she is way out in front of me pulling on the lead until we get back to the house.

Do you think she will outgrow this with time? The vet said she is probably scared and will adjust, but her tail is up when we are out walking so she doesn't look scared to me.

My husband takes her to the park and he says she is getting used to things there and likes to go. I think he just lets her wander and explore (on leash, though) which concerns me - I was told to not let her be the boss or we will regret it later.

Any suggestions on what I can do, or is it just a matter of waiting for her to grow into liking walks?

She is 3-4 months old (we're not entirely sure) and is a mix - maybe beagle, border collie, possibly retriever or terrier...okay, just a mix of some sort, medium-to-large dog.

Thanks,
Jamiya

hi i know how you feel i had the same with my puppiesi always make sure my pups walk on there lead before they go to there new homes some puppies will and some just refuse. there is nothing worse than taking them for a walk and they jump about sqealing and so on she will grow out of it the more she is walked the easier it becomes i found that if i gave into the puppies they would carry on doing it in the end i just made them go and after a couple of weeks they were great all i can really say is keep making her she will soon learn that walking is fun and she will start to walk on the lead but never give into her when she throws herself about i know it can be hard as they are still only babies keep us posted on her progress

Hehe, my puppy did the same thing and sometimes still does. I used to laugh because most people say that puppies pull on their leash and here I was trying to coax my puppy to even move. I think this is a puppy thing. He is 4 months old now and is much better but still takes an occasional rest in the middle of our walks. I just coax him and he eventually moves along. Just make sure you keep going for walks but try not to make them too long. I think about 1/2 mile is Max's limit as of now, if I try to keep going he either plops down or starts jumping around on the leash. As far as the park thing, I'm not an expert but I dont' see anything wrong with that as long as you are having structured time on the leash too. Puppies have to have some fun don't they?

Thanks for the responses!

I guess why I am concerned is that we used to have two terrier mixes that were littermates. One was the smartest, most cooperative little dog you'd ever want to meet. The other was stubborn to no end. She also tended to overweight, barked constantly, and all sorts of annoying things like that!

Anyway, that one didn't like to go on walks. She would walk for a while and then plop down and refuse to go any further. At that point, the only choice was to carry her. I always just figured she was a lazy dog and was too tired to continue. Although, she did this in her puppy obedience class as well, even when it was the very beginning of class. She NEVER walked on her leash in class, not even one step. Back then you were told to drag them if they wouldn't walk - I'm so glad that is not advocated anymore!

I am hoping our new puppy doesn't become like this! I will keep taking her out, as you suggest.

It is so funny - when she wants to go home, she grabs the leash in her mouth and starts tugging toward home, like SHE is trying to walk ME home. I can't help but think of a tiny horse with the bit in her mouth...

My Standard Poodle was like that at first too. He outgrew it when he realized how much fun walks were. I'm sure that will happen with yours eventually too. I had a Mini Schanuzer a long time ago that acted like your other one though. She would walk along great then all of a sudden just stop and wouldn't go any further. I gave up on walks eventually with her. She just didn't like them. She prefered running the yard and in the house. I assume that your new one will be fine though. Good luck!!

She actually runs away when I get the leash. I have to chase her and her ears go down and her tail. She so needs to burn off energy in the mornings. She is wild and I can't control her. But she doesn't want to go for a walk! Arrrrgh!

my britany used to do the same thing, so we would carry him 1/2 way or until he didn't know where we were, since it felt like we were tearing up his pads when we tried to get him to come with us. After we got 1/2 way and set him down, we let him run home, so all the energy was let out anyways! yea! Now, at 5 months, he brings us the leash because he wants to go on walks SO badly, and we go 1-2 miles, and he still isn't always worn out afterwards! Well, hope your pup learns that walks are a good thing!

In the two months since my original post, Nala does indeed do better on walks. She likes them now, and now that I have rediscovered the Gentle Leader, she is actually fairly well-behaved.

I still have to stop for her to sniff every blade of grass, of course, but nothing is perfect.

Puppyhood was a while ago for my dog, but I remember him being initially shy about the pressure of the leash. As far as I can recall: He was used to wearing the collar, so I attached the leash to him and played with toys with him indoors and in the yard as he got used to having a leash on. After a day or two of letting him drag the leash around, I picked it up and led him around a little bit indoors and in the yard, making it a bit of a game. I would lure him with toys, and made a point to lead him into the kitchen on leash for his meals and random treats. After a few days of this, he was used to the periodic on-and-off pressure of the leash and adjusted to being outside without much problem. Plus, he loves to go outside anyway, so the leash wasn't difficult for him to accept.

I think the key was keeping it upbeat and developing possitive associations with the leash and being led on leash.

As for the sniffing, he's got me well-trained. I automatically slow down when he reaches an interesting bush!
