I HAVE TWO 5 MONTH OLD PUPPIES WHO HAVE BEEN HAVING DIARRHEA FOR ABOUT 2-3 WEEKS. WHEN I FIRST NOTICED IT I WAITED A COUPLE OF DAYS TO SEE IF IT GOT BETTER BUT IT DIDN'T SO I TOOK THEM TO THE VET TO SEE IF THEY HAD ANY WORMS. SHE SAID THERE WAS NO SIGN OF PARASITES IN THE STOOL AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE A FEVER. THEY ACT FINE BUT THERE STOOL IS RUNNY. THE ONE DOG HAS IT WORSE THAN THE OTHER. SHE GAVE ME SOME ANTIBOTICS AND THEY HELPED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. I TRIED GIVEN THEM SOME RICE WITH THEIR FOOD BUT IT DIDN'T SEEM TO HELP EITHER. I HAD A FRIEND TELL ME TO GIVE THEM SOME PUMPKIN, THEY SAID IT MIGHT HELP. I HAVN'T TRIED IT YET. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE THEIR DOG FOOD THAT'S MAKING THEM SICK. I'VE TAKING CARE OF THEM SINCE THEY WERE 2 WEEKS OLD ( THEIR MOMMY DIED) AND EVER SINCE THEY COULD EAT SOLID FOOD I'VE BEEN GIVEN THEM SICIENCE DIET. BUT READING THROUGH THIS WEB PAGE I'VE FOUND OUT THAT SICIENCE DIET ISN'T GOOD FOR THEM AT ALL. DO YA'LL THINK IT COULD BE THE DOG FOOD MAKING THEM SICK? THERE OUTSIDE DOGS AND SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT THE HEAT COULD TRIGGER DIARRHEA. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

THANKS

At this point I would go back to the vet...something is not right. On occasion when my dogs get a case of the runs I will give them a Pepto tablet, it usually helps. I would not recommned you do this with your pups because it doesn't sound like a simple upset stomach. Something is causing the sustained diarrhea and that needs to be resolved. They can dehydrate very rapidly so it's important to have your vet take a look.

WHEN I WENT TO THE VET SHE DIDN'T HAVE ANY ANSWERS FOR ME. ALL SHE COULD FIND IS SOME GAS BUBBLES IN THERE STOMACHS. SHE SAID THEY COULD HAVE GOTTEN IT FROM ANY THING LIKE AN OLD STICK THEY CHEWED ON FROM A DEAD ANIMAL THEY MIGHT HAVE FOUND. I HAD TO PAY $120.00 FOR HER TO TELL ME THAT.

I'LL ALSO ADD THAT SOMETIMES IT'S NOT AS BAD AS OTHER TIMES. LIKE SOMETIMES ONE WILL HAVE NORMAL STOOL AND THEN JUST A LITTLE SOFTNESS.

And she made no suggestions on where to go from here? Got what from a stick? What was she referring to? Maybe call and ask what she thinks about changing food or giving them a pepto tablet. She must have SOMETHING to suggest you do.

Better yet I would find another vet. This one doesn't seem to be helping too much because obviously something is wrong with your pups. There are more tests that can be done for your puppies. I went through this with my dog Brute. He had diarrhea and soft stools since we had him and there were all kinds of tests that were done from blood tests to more extensive tests on the stools. It turned out that he has a food allergy. I switched him over to Nutro lamb and rice and he improved dramatically. Both your dogs have diarrhea so I am not sure if it could be a food allergy in your case (and of course I am not a vet). I would suggest that you find another vet that seems more concerned about your dogs. This one dismissed you too soon.

Dump that vet and get one that cares. Also try giving them a bland diet of chicken and brown rice for a few days. If they improve, then try their food again,if they get the runs again its the food. Some foods can go bad too. Look into some of the high quality kibbles. We feed Innova. Be careful, your dogs can easily suffer from dehydration. Did the vet mention that at all. When dehydrated the organs don't work like they should. Also I saw a vet on t.v. prescribe pumpkin for constipation, not the runs. Anyone else hear that.

I agree with finding a new vet. You need to get to the bottom of the problem. I still think it could be worms since they both have diarrhea. They can have worms and not necessarily have them in their stools, depending on what part of the cycle the worm is in. Most puppies have worms- your vet should have de-wormed them as a precaution.
Have they been dewormed since you adopted them? Good luck-

The reason I didn't jump to finding a new vet is because sometimes the vet recommends things people can't afford and decline doing...like lab work, thats why I was asking her what she was referring to about the stick. Tracy I am not assuming that those were choices you made at all...I am just pointing out that not much information has been laid out yet, it could be that there is no more to offer or it could be that it just wasn't posted.

I don't know if your vet recommended to keep them off of food for 24 hours. Then just give them rice and some boiled chicken/beef.

Also, take in another stool sample. I worked for a vet for 5 years. All they do is look at the stool under a microscope. unless that portion is infected with worms...it might not be caught. They should treat either way.

Good luck!

i have always found if one of my dogs has diarroeah they all get it i dont give them anything to eat apart from scrabbled eggs with some boiled rice mixed in for 24hours that seems to clear it up. your vet doesnt seem to know what she is talking about because just because there was no signs of worms in there stools doesnt mean they dont have them if you place ur hand under your puppies abdomen and feel if there stomach feels swollen yet mushy then it could be worse but i would have another vet look at them just to make sure there is nothing goin on in there, puppies are funny little fella'sthe slightest little thing can upset there stomachs from change of food to the teperature of there drinking water hope the problem gets solved for you keeps us all posted and good luck with the pups

High everyone,

Thanks for all the posts! I guess I shouldn't have called their stool "diarrhea", because their not just going everywhere all the time. The reason I said it was diarrhea was because it was not a regular solid stool.
That's my fault and I apologize.
As far as the stick and dead animal comment I made; the vet was just saying that dogs get sick over the slightest things such as chewing on an old stick or finding a dead animal and eating it. Since my dogs live outside they get into stuff all the time that I don't know of. My dogs have both had all their shots and has been de-wormed. They get their heart worm protection every month.
I bought some Nutro Lamb and Rice food yesterday and mixed it with their S.D. dog food and they liked it a lot. I'm going to try it for a couple of days and see how it goes.
The only thing that kind of scares me is that about 1 month and a half ago I was taking care of a puppy my brother found; and she had toxcita. Which my dogs never came in contact with her but it still worried me and that's when about 3 weeks ago I took them to the vet to get tested for toxcita. When I was in the waiting room I wasn't sure which dog was running (meaning their stool) and I found out the bad way because both of them did number 2 just about the same time. My dog Tuck his was perfectly fine and then that's when my other dog Chance did his business everywhere. So I guess at that time I could call his diarrhea, and she tested both of them for the worms and found nothing and that's when she said it could just about anything and gave me some antibotics.
When she said she heared gas bubbles in his stomach that made me believe that it could be the food.
Their both doing great as far as energy and playfullness. I'm keeping a close eye on their stool. I think if I see another bad stool I just scoop it and just take it the vet and not the pups. I noticed on my bill she charged me $35.00 just to rub on Chance's belly, and still not have reasons for his sickness.
It really is hard for me to find a good vet. I've heard for a lot of other people around here that their very few and far between.

Hi! Don't give up on finding a good vet. Try a few out and see which one you feel the most comfortable with. Don't forget to ask questions and make suggestions if you don't understand something or if you just don't feel comfortable with what you are hearing. That is what I did and I ended up changing vets a couple of times finally finding one that helped me figure out my dog had food allergies. I did lots of research on the internet too and that is what helped me figure out that is what I was dealing with. Good luck. If you have any more problems or questions, you know we are here! Like I mentioned, I went through the same thing you are going through.
