I TAKE CARE OF A FRIEND'S 7 MONTH OLD GOLDEN RETRIEVER DURING THE DAY AND WHILE SHE IS ASLEEP SHE IS INCONTINANT OF URINE. THE VET HAS TREATED HER WITH ANTIBIOTICS FOR A VAGINAL INFECTION SAYING THAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE URINE DRIBBLING WHILE SHE IS ASLEEP. SHE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM I THINK SINCE DAY ONE. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE CAUSE OF THIS AND THE TREATMENT.

I think this is usually related to an infection and should clear up if the infection gets treated. My dog has had recurring bladder infections, but she is 16 and this is fairly common for an older dog. I can always tell if she has one because she leaks during the night. My vet also said there is a pill for incontinence, but I am not sure about using it on a dog as young as yours. Something to ask your vet about. I used it on my dog and it worked well, but I found that once the infection cleared up, she no longer leaked. I would advise getting to the bottom of why she is getting an infection, and make sure it completely clears up, then see if there is improvment with the incontinence. There could be something else going on, and you would want to get to the bottom of it before starting any other kinds of medications.

Is this dog spayed? If so, how old was she when it was done? I have heard of something called spay incontinence. It happens after they are spayed and usually causes them to leak urine during sleep. I think it may happen when they are spayed too early but I may be wrong and it may happen no matter what age. Have her ask the Vet about that.

I have heard the same thing about spaying too young. That is one thing I disagree with when it comes to adopting from the shelters (although that would not stop me from adopting, and I do understand why they do it.) Many of the shelters I have visited require all cats and dogs to be spayed or nuetered before they are adopted. Even the puppies and kittens. I have known several cats and dogs that were adopted at 6-12 weeks of age that have gone on to have urinary incontinence, recurring bladder infections etc. and I have heard two different vets say that it can be due to being spayed or nuetered too young. One of my friends really struggles with this issue with her cat, who she adopted at 7 weeks of age and she had been spayed. Now the cat is is 3 years old and still has bladder infections a lot. I think spaying/neutering this early can greatly affect their overall bladder and urinary tract health. Good point Lacey.
