my friends dog is a jack russel terrior, and her name is gracie, she is really active and everything, and they feed her two times a day, but i think she is awfully skinny, she looks like on of those greyhound dogs that are at racetracks! every time that gracie comes over to my house, i let her eat 3 times a day, because she does so much playing that she HAS to get hungry before her regular eating time, i want to help this dog gain weight, but i don't want to get her feeding time out of balance and make it worse for her! my friend is a good owner, i just think that she might not realize that her dogs metabolism is so high she needs to be fed more! please give me advice on how to deal with this, i don't want to offend my friend and tell her she isn't feeding her dog enough, but you can see gracies ribs and backbone! Not like you see on tv when they haven't been fed, just too skinny for MY personal comfort zone!

Daphne,
With the risk of offending your friend, you have to let her know that her dog does not look right. Her ribs should not show!!! How old is the dog? Up to one year of age, you have to give them at least three meals a day. Some people free feed their babies.
But then again, she may want to take her to the vet, to make sure there's nothing else wrong with her.
Please do not hesitate to let your friend know how you feel about this. Even if she may not like it now (even though I don't know why?), I can assure you she will be grateful later.

well, she is about 6-9 months old, she goes to the vet on a regular basis because she has barometric pressure problems unless she gets medicine, so she goes about every two months, they don't say anything about her weight to my knowledge, gracie is at my house now, and she has eaten quite a bit today, 3 meals, and one snack

Jack Russells should look like little tanks. No ribs should be showing. However, if this one is under vet care, then the owner should be aware of the problem. You might send him or show him pictures of Jack Russells...kind of help him get the hint. For their size these dogs need to eat a lot of food.

Most dog food containers say how much should be fed, but yes you have to alter it depending on the activity level. The more active more food, less active less food. My poodle is down to 11 pounds now. Being that she has degenerative arthritis her spine does show. It is one of the traits of arthritis. But her vet and the specialist say her weight is absolutley perfect and not to change a thing. Its hard when your dog is taking prednisone because it makes them hungry all day long. I give her a little snack mid-day but I would love to do more. So I think your friend know whats going on and probably has asked the vet if he's alright the way he is. Now how long is it that you are suppossed to feed pups three times a day. Is it up to a year. If so bring that to her attention.
