I have a 7 month old toy poodle. I want to start taking her to the dog park. I have never been, but my friend goes there with his dogs all the time. He tells me that he lets his dogs run free at the park. He says if I dont let her run free the first time then she wont do good there. I have a retractable lease and personaly would feel more comfortable keeping her on the leash until she is used to the surroundings. I dont know how she will react to other dogs and how they will react to her. I would rather have her closer to me just in case. I was just wondering if that is a bad thing to do? I dont want her getting bullied by other dogs at the park. If she was attacked then she might not ever want to go back. What are your opinions.

I would definitly keep her on the leash maybe even the first couple of times. YOu may wind up in a situation where another dog scares her she doesnt want to go at all. This will help her get used to the dogs while you are right there and have control of the situation.

Oh she is current on all her shots. I've had her since she was 10 weeks and the shots were priority. I have been waiting to take her to the park until she was spayed. She had her surgery last week and is finally fully recovered.

In Dallas they had a big and a little dog park. This was a great set up for the little dogs. I disagree with keeping her on the leash. It has been my experience that the dogs who are on the leashes at the park are at a disadvantage and become more aggressive as they feel threatened and can't readily escape. I have seen this happen a lot. As soon as they are let off, they are perfectly fine. Also the leashes get tangled with the other dogs etc... Instead I would recommend holding your dog if she is small enough. Then find a quiet part of the park. There is always one corner with less action. Hold your dog a minute then let her down where it is less active. This way she can integrate with the other dogs at her own pace.

I have a big dog who LOVES to play with little dogs, as soon as one comes to the park he runs over to it. This takes them back at first, but after a second they are fine with it and usually play.

Hello

I will not allow my dog of her leash at the park.

Reason #1 .. Even the best trained and most well behaved dog will disobey the command of come at some point and time!! If she were to run off leash and disobey the command of come, I risk her being hurt by another dog or hit by a car.

Reason #2 .. I can't control other dogs!! She likes other dogs, but, if she runs over to say "Hello" and the dog isn't friendly, I risk her getting hurt.

The unoffical Dog Park in my area requires dogs to be on a laesh. I am amazed at how many owners ignore the rule!!!

I agree with fleafly. If you want to take your dog to the dog park (and it is an fenced in dog park... as in the dog can't go anywhere to get hit by a car, run away...) I would let the dog off the leash.

I was very heistant to let my dog go the first time we were at the park. But, everyone there suggested I do that and my dog reacted much better than when we were trying to keep him on leash to get used to his surroundings. When we kept him on leash, he felt more defensive (since he was stuck right next to us while all the other dogs ran free).

Do you know of a time at the park that is less active than other times? (Like when only one or two dogs would be there?) Maybe you can go when you think it would be less overwhelming and more controlled.

I've found out on these boards that there are mixed feelings on dog parks. I personally have had wonderful experiences there (and all the little dogs had no problems and actually rule the place). The people that go to my park are responsable and their dogs are very well behaved.

If you go, I hope you have a great time. Just do what your comfortable with.

Well I took Angel to the dog park last night. I did keep her on the leash. This park was not separated for little and big dogs. There were some huge dogs there compared to her. She did okay, but was pretty scared about the active dogs. She made a few friends which was good to see. She liked the two small dogs that were there and there was this huge dog that was older so she liked him more than the younger bigger dogs. There was a time when 3 dogs ran up to her and jumped on her. I was glad I had her on the leash, cause I was able to pick her up before she got hurt. There was a pitt there that was causing alot of problems, so I think I will keep her on the leash for now. I know of a different park that is separated for little and big dogs. I'm going to try that park tonight. I think it will be a better experience. Its alot bigger so it will be more fun for her. It was nice because when we got home she was all tuckered out and passed out right away. Cant wait till we go tonight.

Nessa: I have such mixed feeling about this. While I agree with Fleafly about not keeping your dog on a leash. But Please don't take Angel in with the large dogs. Take her if anywhere to the park that has a separate side for small dogs. I was stupid and brought my two over to the big dog area becasue there was no dogs to play with and my dogs don't bother anyone. Sasha hates to be down with the big dogs up in her face so I carry her. But my terrier he just walks around minding his own business. he drank water from a giant alaskan malamute water dish and the dog , 9 months old only lunged at him grabbing him by his ribcage, picked him up and threw him aside. She proceeded to go after him but the owners stopped her. But then being that he was hurt and screaming like you would not believe. Dogs came running. A pit bull was closing in on him. Right now all of a sudden this is bringing back the sad feelings I had then and I am again tearing up about it. I had to yell for someone to grab him and pick him up. To shorten the story,he had to have 2 staples on one side on the other he had a wound and also 2 fractured ribs. Vet said he was lucky the malamute did not crush his ribcage. This dog had never done anything like this before and it was a shock to everyone. I was able to get back half the vet costs which were a total of over $550.00. So, not saying things don't happen in the small dogs side also. Just watch your dog like a hawk. I've got quiet a few dog park stories. I don't go all that often now since Sasha has her arthrtis and walking on the mulch they have there hurts her feet. She just like to do her business and sit on my lap. Be very careful. A large dog can inflict so much more damage. Had my dog been your it could have been killed.

I only let mine off the leash if it is fenced. I think small dog parks are much better for small dogs. I agree that little dogs can easily be hurt by big ones. Even if they are just trying to play. My dog park was always slow in the mornings during the week, or even at lunch time. These might be good times to get her used to the idea.

Hey Nessa,
Yeah, i agree w/ Puttin510, be very carefull. There's some dog owners out there, that claim to know their dog, and say things like "wow, he's never actted like that before"!?! BULL, these lame-brains don't know their dogs. "But he's been trained by top trainers". Even MORE balony. Obviously, NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! Believe me, these kind of idiotic things happen. With reactions like those from their dogs shows EXACTLY how much "they know" their dogs. Just be carefull, and like someone said, "watch your dog like a hawk". This will also give you a lot of understanding on how your dog socializes w/ others as well.
Definatly, i recommend that you go to that other park, that has that separated-fenced-small-dog-area. The chances of your pup getting seriously/badly hurt are a lot slimmer. Not to say that your dog is going to get hurt, but really, in dog-parks, and w/ unreliable owners, you just never know. The first time i ever took my pup to a dog park, we just hanged outside of the play area, on the other side of the fence. I watched my dog watch dogs play on the inside. By doing this, you'll be able to tell if your pup is willing/wanting more, like she/he wants to go in & play too, get's aggressive and wants to fight, or even get's scared and wants nothing of it, etc, etc.
So, i saw how my dog had a neutral look on his face and body language. So, the next time around he definatly wanted in. Ohh yeah, i also agree w/ not having the leash on inside the run. This sometimes causes aggressivness from other dogs too. Usually these unpredictable/spontaneous/aggressive dogs are owned by those people that think "they know" their dogs... Just be the eye in the sky, and look out for the playground bullies. Overall, it's a GREAT, hopfully positive experiance for both of you. Have Funn!

Be careful in the small dogs area too. The last time I was there, there was two women, one had a larger dog and the other a small jack russell.(parson terrrier) They had been in the bog dog area but had to leave because the J R kept annoying the bigger dogs. She came over and asked us if it was ok if her firends big dog could come in. Now this was the just after everything had happened to Rufus and I was there trying to make sure he was not afraid of other dogs. He did fine. But me I said no way there is a big dog area right over there. I said if she comes in I'm leaving. She was understanding, but the jack russell owner came in with dog and that small guy went straight after this mini-pincsher(about all 5 poundsof a pinscher) it was very agressive. They scuffled a few seconds before the owners could get them apart. But that JR was way too agresive to be in with any other dogs. It really scared me too. everything was fine until they got there. So when ever someone brings in a new dog have yours with you until you see how it acts.

I took Angel to the other park that was sectioned off. She had a great time. She ran around and didnt even look to see were I was. I'm glad I can take her to the park, its nice to let her play after she has been home all day. I took her back to the park that wasnt sectioned off. She did great with the big dogs. She was pulling her leash so hard to get into the gates. So I know she is enjoying the park. She met another toy poodle last night, it was the cutest thing. She learned that she is small enough to let the big dogs chase her then jump up on the table for safety! I want to get a video camera so I can record her at the park.

I can just see her whipping around. You knw I just bought a new digital camera and it is also a digital video type of thing also. Now that its on a digital camera, I don't know if its called video. But we have to get something set up on our computer an re-install windows ME to use it, but its pretty cool. I got it from www.hsn.com for about $140 a few months ago. Ok its called digital video, and its 3.1 mega pixels. Glas Angel had fun, just be sure to watch very carefully.
