Our 2.5 year old 47 pound Basset Hound was diagnosed with Addison's disease over a year ago and has been through 3 crisis with the last one in late March 2003. Her treatment is one percortin injection every 28 days and 10mg of predisone every 3 days. Bassets by nature are constantly hungry and the prednisone amplifies this. Our latest problem is that she is eating everything she can find in our yard including small twigs, grass, small nuts, bird food and even her own feces. It seems that nothing is off limits. I've talked to our VET about giving her a low calorie food (like celery, lettuce or ice cubes) to help her feel full but he didn't like this idea. Another option is to put a muzzle on her but this seems to compromise her quality of life. What is the best way for us to treat this disease, give our basset good quality of life and not compromise her health at the same time? Thank You, IP: Logged |

Addison's disease is also known as hypoadrenocorticism. It is an insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. Any mammal can get the disease and JFK (the president) had Addison's. For more information: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/cliented/addisons.htm or -David IP: Logged |

My poodle is on prednisone for arthritis and she is always following us around everytime anyone passes thru the kitchen. She makes sure no-one leaves any crumbs on the floor. I had had her on a diet and vegitables are a big part of it. I give her more veggies than kibble to give her that full feeling at least for the moment. I give very small snacks inbetween breakfast and dinner. Give her chew stickes also. I don't see anything wrong with adding veggies. Did vet say it would alter anything with the addison's problem. My step mother has this and has to keep hers at the correct doseage or she will lapse almost comma like problem where she can not move and has to be rushed to the hospital. She has had this happen a couple times. Once before her arrival home from Ireland. It can be fine though as long as the meds are taken and at the right doseage. I would say keep an eye on her while she is outside. Thats all I can think of to do, I know muzzling sounds cruel. IP: Logged |
