Hi !

Me and my wife are the proud owners of two loveable dogs. Ricky is a 9 years old Lassah-Apso and was the family do of my wife (she is 22 yr old, so she has the dog since she's 13). Bottine is a 2 year old Shih-tsu and we adopted her last year.

For the first year the dogs behaved very well, they are housebroken, and soooo sweet. Since we both work, the dogs spend the days alone (together) and spend the evening with us.

Recently, we move to a new house, and I started to work at home (a computer job) and I realized that the dogs sleep a LOT ! Basically, they'll spend the whole days sleeping, sometimes waking up when I move (getting something to drink, or going to the bathroom) and then they go back to sleep.

In the evening it's the same, if we are active, they'll wake up, maybe play with us or together, and as soon as we're calm (listening to TV or talking...) they go back to sleep.

I discovered that if I give them each a chew stick then they'll be very active chewing the stick, and maybe 30 minutes later the get tired of it and go sleeping.

I was wondering: is it bad for them to sleep that much ? They always sleep very well at night (7-8 hours) and during the day they may sleep another 10 to 12 hours ... Is it bad ?

What should we do to "wake them up" a little bit ?

We take good care of them, we play with them at least once a day, they go out 3 to 4 times a day, the eat well (and poop well!) ... They love us (really!!) and we love them ...

I think it's just because they are bored (we're not very active) because we cannot play with them all the time ! We tried toys, but unlike cats, dogs won't play alone ...

Thanks !

that is very normal, I laugh because my dogs are the same way. And they talk about cats sleeping a lot. My dogs are in their routine, they sleep most of they day, now when I come home at lunch, they dont even get exited, its like I am interupting their afternoon nap time. But it is different when I come home from work, they are all play for a few hours, and then they are sound asleep by 8:00 and usually out for the night. Every one in awhile my lab will get a second wind about 9:00 and want to play. He is the worst about sleeping. I know he easily sleeps 9 hours during the day. So I wouldnt worry about it.

My dogs do the same thing. I work at home sometimes too. Mine do the same thing, they sleep until I move then they follow me to the bathroom or whatever and lay down until I move again. Even when I put them in the backyard they play a minute then lay down in the shade and sleep. I wouldn't worry unless they have other symptoms. I guess dogs are just as lazy as cats!

Same here.If you are worried just take them out for a walk or to your yard and rile them up. Any excersize is good. But yours are normal.
