Chance our 3.5 year old Rotty is back from the Vet's,he has a bad Intestinal Track Infection as of this moment. He ended up losing 9 lbs. They gave him an antibiotic shot + 2 tablets of Albon500 every 12hrs.his diet is Eukanuba Canine Low Residue Diet 1.5 cups 3xa day.The Vet also did A complete check up,complete blood work up,Stool sample&Lipase(I guess this is also some type of blood test)He also was given Advantix red for fleas.
He goes back for a recheck in 1 week. He's a sick Fella right at the moment I sure hope this medication helps. He gets his blood work results back tonight.I Pray that the test come out clean. The Vet told me that Rotty's are prone to intestianal infections,so when we get him better I'm gonna need to study up on ways to prevent this from happening again. On a good note when I was worried about his bad breath and his teeth, the Vet said he has good strong teeth the odor was from his infection. Thanks all and please say a little prayer for him that his blood work comes out okay.

your poor baby - I am glad to hear they did find something and he is on the mend. Wow 9# is a lot of weight to lose from being sick. When my cat lost 3# from being sick, the vet said take it in human perspective that would be me losing 20# without going on a diet my prayers are with Chance and he should be back to his old self soon

Its 8:00am Thursday morning I called Hospital,Chance has pulled thru the night the Vet can give us his Update on how the Kidney's are doing around 10:00am.He has a form of **Leptospirosis** even tho he has been Vaccinated there is 2 new strains of this desease that has cropped up.It is usually caused by wild animales(also contagious from domestic if they carry the desease)from the infected urine. So please be aware that these animals can pass this desease by infected urine if they urinate in your yard also contaminated water, food, bedding, soil. The main wild animals that carry this desease are Voles,Moles,Skunks,Raccoons, field Mice,Woodchucks.I will find out today what to do with our yard for we live out of the city limits and have everyone of these type Wild animals around.
We will get to visit Chance at 11:00am,so I will keep everyone posted.PLEASE be AWARE of Leptospirosis and ask your vet for more details on how to prevent it.

Chance is in my prayers. I hope he recovers quickly. Thank you for updating us about leptospirosis. I thought that since my dogs were vaccinated they were ok. I will ask my vet about this. Thank you for letting us know about this especially while you are going through a trying time. Again, Chance is in my prayers.

I am praying for Chance to pull through this. Thanks for the info on Leptosperosis. I live out in the country where I have many wild animals, my dog last month caught a mole, so I am going to ask my vet about this.

I live in Oregon and I remember when Witt was getting the last in his series of vaccinations, I asked why he had not received any of the Leptospira shots. Witt had gotten most of his shots while still in recue in California, so I thought maybe that was why. It's been a while since we had this conversation, so I am not real clear, but my vet told me that so many dogs actually get Lepto from the vaccine or have a reaction that many vets have opted not to give it unless the animal is very likely to come into contact with it or it has had a repeated bout of diarrhea due to drinking puddle water or something similar. We talked about the fact that I take my dogs to the barn and on trail rides alot, my dogs are able to run 5 acres out in the country, we go camping and fishing frequently. He said if that was so...Dooley my 2 year old Aussie had probably already come into contact with it and developed antibodies, which is all that the vaccine would do. So neither of my dogs have had it. I plan on calling him and asking about the new types that have cropped up and making sure I understood correctly the first time. I am wondering ..has anyone elses vet told them the same?

It's good to know Chance is having some improvement. I hope they let you stay inn w/ him overnight. That would be nice. At least he's eating your good ol' turkey & rice recipe. You know turkey is very high in protein, and rice (i'm thinking white) is highly digestable, more than brown rice. For now, what ever he likes to eat is good, especially if it's quality food, like what your already feeding him. Try letting him drink filtered water. It's better than distilled & tap water. These are jsut some thoughts/ideas for Chance off the top of my head. Overall, listen to Chances' Vet!
Thanks for the info on Leptospirosis... I too will do my own research b4 i ask my vet about it. Chance loves you, and he knows you love him... Blessings.

Well today(SAT.) is the big day to find out if Chance will be okay. His Blood work results will be in at Noon and boy am I ever scared.I Pray that his results show Kidney improvement otherwise all is lost. The Vet said that If they show that there is any improvment we go to step 2.He'll come off the IV's and start to drink more purified water on his own and see if his kidneys will filter on their own. He'll still stay on the antibiotics. If all goes well with blood test we might get to bring him home Monday. Thanks for advise on water for Chance. We drink bottled water,so he will get that too.The Vet said that if everything goes well today that when we bring him home he will stay on medication and a special diet to help his kidney's.Please pray and hope his test come back okay.Thank you everyone for caring and thinking of Chance.

I don't know your dogs exact situation, but here is an experience I had.

We found this cat who was a stray and pregnant. a few weeks after she delivered she started getting sick. We took her to the vet and they said she had kidney failure, and that we should just put her down b/c they didn't think she would make it. I couldn't bear to do that. We took her home and gave her fluids under her skin every day for a week or two. She slowly started to get better. Today she is fat and happy and living a good lazy cat life. Sometimes pets have more will to live than vets know about. I am always hesitant to put an animal done, unless it is really the last resort. I hope that helps somehow. I sympathize with you and your family. It is really hard losing an animal you love. Especially when you have to make that decision. I've been there, and I feel for you.
