I have a German Shepherd Puppy. She is 4 months old. I bought her from a reputable breeder when she was 7 weeks old. She is a show dog. Her sire & dam are show dogs.

My problem is she barks at any one strange. She tries to jump on them too. She doesn't act afraid when this is happening. Her ears are up and her tail is wagging.

Once she gets to know the person she calms down. She even becomes affectionate. But if the person tries to pet her before she gets used to them she nips them.

I am trying very hard to socailize her. I am hoping that maybe with enough socialization she will stop this behavior. I know GSD are big dogs and can be very strong. If she continues this behavior, I'm afraid she will attack someone.

I have begun training and she is doing good so far. I have even tried to get her to sit when a stranger approaches. This seems to distract her.

Is this behavior normal for a GSD? Is she being shy? Will she out grow this? Or is this just the beginning of a good guard dog?

Hi Nubby!!

I have three German Shepherds(!!!). They are the most wonderful and inteligent babies you can dream of!!! But, they need to be trained AND socialized. The earlier, the better. I suppose she has had all of her puppy shots, so you can take her out for walks where she can see different people and different dogs. (Doggy park would be best).

No, she is not shy, she is just being a GSD - they are very protective of their turf, and girls are very protective of the human they own too. The tail wagging does not mean she is welcoming your guests. If the wagging is tail up, that shows warning/beginning of aggression. You need to correct this. GSDs should be aloof, but NOT aggressive with people they see for the first time.

Here's a site that will help you a lot: http://www.justshepherds.com/training.htm
-they also give you links to other training sites, just scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page.

Good luck and enjoy working with your sweetie!!

I love shepards too, had them when I was growing up. They are very protective of their family. I want to own one one day again. Yours is a puppy still testing his limits too. Make sure to let her know right away that the nipping is a bad thing. Maybe take her for a time out as soon as she does it. letting her know right then thats the reason. Tell your friends to approach him carefully with hand extended so she can smell it first, instead of them just groping her which she seems to dislike. She wants to know who you are before you touch her. She will outgrow the jumping on people also, just make a point of telling her no and down.
