Lab/pit mixes seem to be the topic lately.
I have spent several hours today visiting a litter of lab /pit mixes at our local shelter. I really want to adopt one, but am not entirely sure.

I am VERY familiar with the lab breed as I have two black females now. I almost adopted a lab/pit mix just over a year ago, but chickened out because I figured if I was the least little bit unsure, I shouldn't do it. So, two friends of mine adopted 2 of that litter and thats when I adopted my second bl lab female.

Anyway, thier dogs grew up to be beautiful well mannered babies. Showing no signs of my "concerns" (aggression, neighorhood complaints..etc).
Then today, when I was visiting our shelter... boom..ANOTHER litter of Lab/pit mixes. I am soooooo tempted. Should I just give in? I know I want to!

Any advice? please?
Thanks!

I would suggest you research the heck out of the Pit Bull breed, knowledge is power. Pit Bulls have gotten a bad rap...they are not viscious, mean or difficult to handle. PEOPLE are the problem, irresponsible owners, people with bad intentions etc. Pit Bulls are loving, smart and all around awesome dogs. Train your pup well, and be a responsible owner and you won't have any complaints or worries. I would caution you in that after you get one...you may wish to call it a "lab mix" or "lab/boxer mix", it may save you some trouble with your homeowners insurance. I think Goob who posts on this board has a couple Pit Bulls, asking him for advice may be a good start.

My neighbors down the street had a yellow lab and a yellow lab pit mix. They listened to their owners like you would not believe. They would stop on a dime and do what ever was asked of them, BUT when they were gone and his mom was watching them, they would act like crazy nuts. I never have problems with dogs especially labs. But I could not get those dogs to stop barking at us everytime we passed. My dogs were so tired of it they would ignore them. I think it was the mix that was the instagater. My other neighbor even thought he would do them a favor and take LoBo for one of his runs. He did fine, and thought he was like by this dog after this dog. He put his hand up to pet him one day and he bit him. His owners were so embarassed they would not even talk to him again. They have moved since. They were perfect for the owner but not nice to us neighbors. At first I tried to talk to them and they let me pet them, but it just never worked. I guess they were very territorial. Thats what the owner kept saying. We owned a pit when I was a kid so I am not against them.

I agree to research the Pit Bull breed since you don't know much about them.

We have a German Shepard/Pit mix. When we got him from the shelter, they didn't advertise his Pit part of the mix. Since Pits get a bad wrap, I would've second guessed getting him if I knew he had Pit in him.

I'm glad that we got the dog. He is the sweetest, most friendly pup (he's a year old now). He is a little terratorial (but I think most dogs are). He'll bark a couple of times and when I will tell him to be quiet, he will (taking a class helped us a lot).

Our dog shows no aggression. He plays with my four year old neices and all the neighborhood dogs. He only barks at people when at home (not in public).

It did scare me at first that he can sound a bit scary if a stranger comes to the door. But every time someone new comes to the door, they let the dog sniff their hand and then he's best friends with the person. My dog reads off of me that it's okay to stop protecting me once I greet the stranger.

Anyhow, I don't know too much about Lab/Pit mixes (muchless Pits). But, just remember... it's ususally the owner, not the dog if you're worried about the stereotypes that come with Pit Bulls.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

We have a pit/lab mix (some of the messages you saw about pit/labs were probably mine ) Just like what lucidity03, the shelter did not have him listed as part pit, they actually had him as German Sheppard mix which no one can see any sheppard in him but I think if I would have seen Pit mix on the tag I would have looked the other way. When we adopted him he was 9 months old so we got him late in the game and we found that he has some behavioral problems (nothing serious but problems that I want to take care of) I believe if we would have gotten him as a pup we wouldn't have these problems with him now. He takes very well to training and the biggest problem we have is that he loves attention a little too much. I don't regret adopting him. I think he was abused by his previous owners and he needs a home who will love him and work with him rather then just give up on him.

I believe that there are no bad dogs... just bad owners.

Well... after a totally sleepless night I have decided to add one of these beautiful male "bully babies" to my family. I introduced my youngest bl. lab to the puppies today... she was a bit scared of the puppy but definetly curious.. they shared a snack together.
Check out the picture?

Hopefully I did that right.
Now I just have to figure out WHICH one and then name him. Ugh... picking out names is soooo difficult!
