Hello,

I'm new here, but it looks like a really, really nice place.

Okay, straight onto my question...

I live in the countryside, with a large yard available, and I am *very* active with jogging and walking. I jog almost every day, jogs ranging from 1 hour to 2,5 hours in length. Currently, I have a Samoyed girl who absolutely *loves* running with me. She's already ten years old, but she's energetic as ever and *always* willing to go on my jogs with me - if I don't take her for a couple of days, she is pure dynamite the next time we go. Hehe.

Anyway, my question is: Since my Samoyed is already 10 years old, I'm not sure how much longer she will be fit for these half-marathons of mine (I'm planning to keep taking her as long as she happily comes with me and clearly wants to run). Therefore, I'm considering getting a second dog who would continue the "running tradition" with me, and I'm wondering what other breeds there are that would be so super-active that they would not tire out from the exercise. I love my Samoyed, and I just may get another of the same breed; the only downfall, really, is the long, white fur that tends to gather a *lot* of dirt, especially in the muddy falltime (I run year-round).

So if anyone has any experience with really active dogs, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks a million!

Love,

Sirius

I have 2 Siberian Huskies and Huskies love to exercise. A matter of fact, they need lots of it every day. You will find that the Northern breeds(Huskies, Samoyeds, Malamutes, etc) require lots of exercise so that might be your way to go. Another plus to a Husky would be that they are very clean dogs and dirt seems to elude them and slide right off! You say you run in the mud though but you would probably still have to clean their paws off (Huskies come in different colors so you don't have to get a white dog...). Downside would be they shed and have "big" sheds twice a year and their coat requires a lot of attention then. Huskies are great dogs and love people. After these two I couldn't go back to any other breed!

Huskies would be my first answer, also perhaps the border collie.

A Louisianna Catahoula Leopard Cur!!!!!
They are very versatile, intelligent, athletic, extremely loyal did I mention intelligent? and comical. I can't say enough about this breed. They are not the dog for many people because they are very active, they need to work and use their minds so they don't make a good couch dog, but a Catahoula would make an excellent running partner. I am placing links below so you can see for yourself.

My favorite because I think the dogs are wonderful examples of the breed. http://members.tripod.com/~EDcatahoulas/

That should get you started in researching, there are many wonderful breeds out there, and of course the mixed breed from the pound can't be beat. The Catahoula is a very unique breed, you will hear often owners say..."I think he reads my mind" or I'm not sure who owns who here". They are a herding/hunting breed, mine will never see a hog or hunt, but he will do agility, flyball, carting and whatever else we decide he might like. They are also used as service dogs, police dogs, search and rescue, therapy ..on and on, as I said they are very versatile, and for the experienced dog person willing to be active with their dog and ...and unbelievable treasure. I call it their CatahoulaCoolNess.

PS They are a breed with a short single coat and adaptable to different terrain and weather.

All dogs are wonderful in their own way, but in your case I would stay away from the little lap dogs (I don't think they can take such a long run, at least most of them won't), and also the hounds, for the obvious reason.... once they get a scent and get a track, you may end up doing your 2 miles trying to get him back!!
But in the end, any choice is good, they are ALL so wonderful! Just please save one that might be put to sleep somewhere in a shelter just because there is nobody out there to love her (or him)!!

I agree with dogangel, try the shelter for an active playful pup. But if you want purebred some really active dogs are herding and sporting breeds.

Good luck!

I have had a Husky for 16 years, and she jogged with me for nearly 14 of those years and she is still in good shape, but no longer jogs with me. I know exactly what you are thinking and we have a new Austrailian Shepherd that loves to exercise, is smart and easy to train and is one of the best breeds I have ever worked with. I used to train Labs for hunting and did plenty of obiendence work on various breeds at the kennel I used to work at and I cannot tell you how impressed I have been with this breed. Read "All About Aussies" and you will see what I am talking about!
Good luck-

If you do decide you want a purebred, checking with that breeds rescues is a wonderful way to adopt as well.

Hello :-)

::::Welcome to the Board::::::

I would like to suggest the following breeds;
Lab
Weimerweimer
Poodle
Springer Spaniel

Another option, is to check out a "What breed is right for me" quiz. I really like the following quiz, as it asks numerous questions many people may not think to ask themselves. It will list a % mark next to the breeds it thinks might work for you http://www.iams.com/en_US/jhtmls/breed_selector/sw_BreedSelector_page.jhtml?li=en_US&bc=I&pti=BS&sc=&lsc=&bsc=

Don't forget about Dalmatians.
They were bred to run along side the stage coaches.
I would love to be buddies with this breed.. but I am far too lazy!

The first breed that popped into my mind was a springer spaniel, then I remembered the guy I work with who runs with his 2 huskies. Don't discount a good mutt, either! I had an irish setter/collie mix that could go for hours. My neighbor's golden retriever goes out with him, but he has to treat his dog with a swim at the end of the run!
