I've read a bunch of the past stuff on dog food and have another question.

Our dogs got sick recently and the vet put them on Hill's Prescription diet (can, chicken/rice), which the dogs just loved.

Now we're back on Iams can (i know, it sucks, we'll change it) and Natural Balance... but they clearly want the Hill's back.

Is it OK to get Hill's for daily use or is it just for times when your dog is sick?

Also, these guys (we got them from the pound) won't touch dry food -- I think the previous owners fed them only canned stuff. Any suggestions for a kind of dry food most adult dogs like? They didn't take to the Nutra stuff Petco pushed on me.

Thanks,

Rich

Rich, Science Diet has prescription formulas and they have food for normal everyday eating. What did your vet reccomend you be feeding them on a normal basis?
I personally won't feed wet dog food because I think it is not good for their teeth and I also think it makes their poo stink way more than it should. Your dogs WILL eat dry dog food if it is all that is offered, trust me they won't starve themselves. They will hold out for a while in hopes that you will provide them with their favorite of course, but when they realize that you are not going to give it to them they will eat what you provide. I would suggest you go to a shop where they offer some quality foods and bring home samples. I did this with mine. I picked out four or five foods that I had researched and knew I would be willing to feed, I put each sample in its own bowl and then placed all the bowls on the floor in a line with the wrapper for each one tucked underneath. I brought each of my three dogs in separately and let them pick. They sniffed each, nibbled on most and then chowed on the one they preferred. Two of my dogs really liked Canidae, the third dog liked California Naturals (which is made by the same company that makes Innova). Funny enough...they did not like Innova. It gave me a good idea of what they liked before I spent any money. Grooming shops, feed stores and small specialty shops carry better quality foods, you won't find them at PetsMart or grocery stores. You might also consider researching and learning how to feed a raw diet.
