Hi. I have a question for anyone who might have some thoughts on dogs that lick. I mean lick all the time. My Boston terrier Gretyl, is most affectionate. She is always licking. Mostly me. She'll lurch at your face, ears, neck anyplace she can get to and lick just as fast as she can. She's almost 7 months old and really is pretty obedient except for this. I can't seem to find the solution to this one. Have thought about spraying myself with a product called Bitter Apple which is suppose to keep puppies from chewing/licking. Any ideas?

P.S. Gracie, my allergic Boxer is doing very well on no meds/shots and strickly eating Natures Recipe Venison and Rice. Thanks for you ideas with her.

My 7 month old Shih-Poo licks ALL THE time as well. She will lick other peoples faces, neck, ears, anything. She does it to me when I have been gone for a while. I too am having problems with this. We have been using "NO LICK", but that doesnt seem to help. My bf hates it when she does it and i feel so bad because I cant get her to stop. It is quite annoying to all of us!!!! help!!

Try a 60 pound Catahoula pup for a licking fool! We have been working on this with out pup too. I read an article about mouthing and licking recently and we are trying it's suggestions.
Basically when he puts his mouth on me or licks, I am supposed to say "OUCH", give him a second to consider my reaction and if he does it again, I say ouch again, but this time I get up and leave the room. I am supposed to close a door between us and remain gone for a few minutes. The message the dog is supposed to get is "your licking/mouthing behavior drives me away from you". Which is NOT what they want. He is getting much better...but on occasion he licks more, in a submissive way...as if he feels bad for hurting you. (Yes I know I may be reading more into it than is there) All the same it has cut this behavior in half so far.

Hi there, mommy of Graetl!

I read in Stanley Coren's book "How to speak Dog", that contrary to the commom belief that licking is a dog's way to kiss, it's actually either a puppy's way to let you know that he's hungry, or, which I think is the case with your baby, could be a sign of submission and a way to show respect for the "dominant dog" - you(!!)
My Dachshunds get into the same licking frenzy when I take them in my lap, whereas my big dogs don't (.. well I don't take them in my lap, or I wouldn't have one - they're all somewhere in between 80 and 110 pounds each!!...)
What helped my little ones (especially when they were puppies) was diverting their attention from licking to playing (with toys or whatever else works for you...) Be sure not to fall into the trap of giving her any treats when she licks you, or you'll create a monster!!! Monster licker!!!

I hope this helps.

Hi, have been on vacation. Thanks for the good tips re my licker-doggie. I agree that in this case, it is a sign of submission. My grandsons and I are working very hard to allow a kiss or two, then no more. She's been doing very well, actually. Thanks for all the responses.
