i've had my male chihuahua for about a year now. when i first got him he never growled but did sometimes bark at strangers. then about 3 months ago i got a female chihuahua and since then i think he has become jelous of her. i am also pregnant so i don't know if that plays a role. everytime i pick him up he will growl at me and a few times he has shown his teeth. everytime i go to pet the girl dog he pushes her out of the way and goes for my hand so i will pet him. the two dogs get along great together. i am "fixing" my dog to see if maybe that will help out the problem or maybe i should just get rid of the female??? i am confuzed any input??? Oh please do not get rid of the female. There are so many strays out there. I dont really have much advice for this. Maybe you can try giving him treats while you play with the female. Then he might learn that its okay to let you play with her. Just a suggestion. Hope everything works out. IP: Logged |

He is asserting his power as the alpha dog. You need to make sure that you don't act fearful towards him, he will take that and run with it. acting even worse. He needs you to be very firm with him. You will become his Aplha figure. Pet him first and then set him aside and pet your female. He needs to know that he is still head dog. Dogs need to be in a position. but he definatley needs to be put in his place. Tell him no in a very firm voice. It takes time and consisitency. My poodle will walk right inbetween me and my other dog to take back the attention. I will just put her off to the side after telling her not to do that. Making sure to keep them separate at this time. She really hates to let him get any attention. She has growled at my teenage boys and my husband. They need to be told no and put off whatever place they are be it the couch your bed. His bed is his domain and he should not be bothered there. Until they realize that only you can boss them around and not vice versa. You can allow him in certain places when he realizes that you are the boss. Also to make your dog sit for you or do some sort of trick right before he eats, he will see you are in charge. I hope that comes across understandably IP: Logged |

I got ya puttin...and I agree. Getting him nuetered is a first step in the right direction. My mother has two chihuahuas and I have to tell you they are no fun to be around. She spoils them rotten, which isn't really the bad part..it's that they are not expected to follow any rules. My mother has had large dogs in the past and they were well behaved and trained, but something about having these lil' dogs has changed her idea of what manners means. They are allowed to snap at people...she always makes an excuse for it. They actually get ON the table and she feeds them off her plate..she thinks this is cute. The list goes on and on...she wonders why I won't keep her dogs for her when they want to go somewhere. Try what puttin says..make sure your dog knows you are boss and don't let him get away with the little stuff, it turns into big stuff. With a baby on the way, the dogs will feel jealousy so getting the issue under control now is a good idea. Smiles and congrats on the coming baby. IP: Logged |

I think just either wait and see or take her to see the vet. That would be sad if your mom took her in for a spay and they found pups. What would she do? An xray perhaps. IP: Logged |

All in all you have to get this dog in order before the baby arrives. My poodle would never have been able to stay here had I had a small child. She hates for them to touch her. IP: Logged |
