Please help! We are in the process of adopting a 6 month old German Shepherd puppy that was found almost dead by starvation 6 weeks ago. The only reason why they didn't euthanize him was because the poor little baby was kind of trying to wag his tail!!! Anyway, I'm asking you good people out there for any advise as far as what to feed this sweetie until I get him back to a normal weight. (He was 16 lbs when they found him, now he wheighs 48 lbs!!!) Also, we have three other big dogs (2 German Shepherds and one Doberman/German Shepherd mix). Are they going to push him around??? They are good with other dogs (obviously), but I just don't want them to hurt the poor little puppy even while playing... Any advise I can get would help a lot!!! Thanks! IP: Logged |

If he was being fostered while he gained weight, his foster parent should be able to tell you what and how much he was eating. Also watch out for food agression. He may be very defensive about his food for awhile. Some animals that nearly starve never get over this. Some seem to forget completely. It depends on the individual. Make sure that he gets his food on a regular schedule. He needs to know that he can depend on it. What the schedule is doesn't matter. The regularity does. If you are getting him from a shelter, they give you a lot of information in the adoption packet. Foster parents become very attached to the dogs and may be willing to stay in touch and help you. Ask. If you do get in touch with the foster parent, remember to send him/her pictures. Knowing that an animal you've helped is doing well and is happy is the biggest pay off we can get. Also note that animals that have been under fed during their growing period often display compensatory gain and continue growing and developing past when a puppy normally does. This means that he may be later reaching maturity and need puppy food longer than a dog that wasn't malnurished. Your vet should be able to tell you how he's maturing. Good luck with him! If he is severely underweight you can also give him ensure. I know some other people that have used this and it puts on weight quite quickly. IP: Logged |

Thanks a lot, PUCK. No, he is not being fostered by anybody, he is still being boarded at the vet, but he is under the care of his rescuers. Of course we will send photos to them, it would only be fair, if nothing else...Since we're at this, do you think it would be better to take him home as soon as possible, or leave him there for another week or two? If it were up to us, we would take him tomorrow, but as I said, we only want what's best for him... IP: Logged |
