I just bought a toy Peke-A-Poo, she is only 6 weeks and weighs 1.5lbs, she's very active and eats more than my 13lb yorkie, but she is aloft. I'm worried that she was too young to be taken away from her mother. She's threw up worms today and I drove her straight to the Vet. He said it was nothing to be concerned about and gave her a does medicine. My Vet says she's healthy but I don't think he realized she's only 6 weeks either. I told him she was 8 weeks but when I got home and looked at the paper work I realized she's so young. Is there anything I need to know to care for a puppy so small and so young. Please anything that can make her transition a little more pleasant. So far she's healthy but I'm just worried.

Sorry to hear about your pup..I think 6 weeks is too young to be taken away from his mother. Call the breeder, or wherever you got the pup from and ask them. Or call your vet back and explain to him that you think shes too young, maybe he can give you some advice! I went and looked at my pup when she was 6 weeks. I got her when she was 12 weeks. I think it may be 8 weeks when they can leave their mom. I could be wrong though, call your vet!! Good luck!

Will do, I would have gladly waited until the puppy was a little older before I picked her up. She's very playful and active but I just don't know if taking them away too young can cause health or socialization problems in the future.

The rule of thumb for bringing a puppy home is (8) weeks of age. Some breeders suggest (10-12) weeks of age.

The Mother shows the puppies the " No Bite" rule between (6-8) weeks of age. The Mother also shows the puppies how to "play" nice between (6-8) weeks of age.

Studies have shown, that puppies brought home at (4-7) weeks of age are at a higher risk of aggression and/or biting issues.

Is it possible for you to use a "serogate" Mom for a few weeks? If not, ask your Vet for tips on how to teach your puppy No Bite and Play Nice.

I am disappointed, that the breeder allowed the puppy to go to his/her new home at (6) weeks of age.

I really am too, I just want a healthy puppy. The Vet said she is fine but I thought she may develop some issues from being taken so young. I'll ask my Vet about the no bite and playing nicely. I went to Petsmart to see if they had any books that would let me know if I should be doing anything else to help her transition. She's constantly routing around when you hold her. I guess she's looking for her moms nipples but she eats the puppy chow rather well too.

Hi Beautiful, I think because you are aware that she was given to you too young and may need some extra effort in areas brings you more likely to make a conscious effort to ensuring your baby will be alright - - and don't worry she will.

I'd never let a pup go before 8 weeks because they are still learning valuable behaviors off their siblings and mom. But perhaps you can simulate some of those behaviors - by instigating play, no bite, ouch, etc. Also ask the breeder if you could come by for a couple of visits or call some of her siblings owners and perhaps you could get together a couple times a week for a puppy play!
have fun with your baby!
