WE use to FREE FEED our dogs. And our lab got realyl overweight. WE have 2 other lab mixes and they are naturalyl slim. We feed them servings now. Does anyone have trouble with your labs being overweight? He seems to be slimming down now. I try to take them down into the woods to swim in the creek to stat fit. He seems to have kidna saggy skin though. Thanks lyndsey IP: Logged |

My lab is about 10-15 # overweight, he is the kind that is short and stocky, so they tend to be heavier not the slender ones I think he is the show dog version vs the hunting dog, he was a pudge when we got him at 12 weeks and never outgrew the baby fat,I found out later he should have been off the puppy food at 6 months because there is so much fat in puppy food and he just got bigger and bigger, the poor thing has been on constant diets now for 6 years without losing weight, I just changed his food again, to Innova, an all natural food with no grains, I think he has lost s a few #, but I think that is just way he is. As long I as I keep him active, I think he will be fine. He is 102#, a biggy, since he is so short, he is my baby. honeybear IP: Logged |

Yes! Labs are known for their problems with overweightness (is that a word?). They need to be exercised everyday for at least 1/2 hour. My lab is half pointer, which kinda slims him out.... IP: Logged |

My sisters choc. lab had this problem, his vet put him on rations, I think it was one cup in morning one cup in evening. She also takes him on her runs. He now is actually a few pounds underweight so diet needs adjusting. Good luck with your lab. IP: Logged |

maybe you could go to your vet and tell them your problem and see if they could write out a diet for your lab. Some friends of mine have a choc lab and they take her to the park everyday and she is in very very good shape. You might want to try to go to the park or start a routine with your pet like 3 times a week go for a walk/run, you could do something like that IP: Logged |

Thank you all for your helpful replies! I'm going to try to start going down to the creek at my house more often with him, as well as my other outside dogs! We have woods that drop down to a creek that they love!!! IP: Logged |
